Timberwolves hang on to beat depleted Pacers 114-110, after Edwards exits early with tight hamstring

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Julius Randle scored 20 of his 31 points in the first half, and Rudy Gobert contributed 14 points and 19 rebounds to help the Minnesota Timberwolves hold on and defeat the depleted Indiana Pacers 114-110 on Sunday night.

The game took a hit for Minnesota early when star Anthony Edwards exited with hamstring tightness just 3:08 into the game. Despite his absence, the Timberwolves managed to maintain control. Donte DiVincenzo stepped up with 17 points to stabilize the Pacers’ backcourt, while Naz Reid added a strong performance with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

For Indiana, Pascal Siakam led the charge with 33 points. He hit a crucial 3-pointer with 42 seconds left to narrow the deficit to 110-108. However, Jaden McDaniels responded with a finger-roll basket to extend Minnesota’s lead to four with 20 seconds remaining, securing the win for the Timberwolves. Aaron Nesmith also contributed 18 points for the Pacers.

The Pacers are facing significant challenges this season. They are without Tyrese Haliburton, who is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon that ended his NBA Finals run, and they lost current leading scorer Bennedict Mathurin to a sprained toe the previous night in Memphis. Additionally, Andrew Nembhard, the primary point guard during Haliburton’s absence, missed his second straight game with a shoulder strain. In total, seven players were unavailable, forcing Indiana to deploy a starting lineup featuring journeyman Jay Huff, little-used big man Isaiah Jackson, and young guard Ben Sheppard.

The home opener in Minnesota carried extra excitement with the introduction of stage-style lighting on the court and the return of the all-black uniforms with pine-tree trim, reminiscent of the Kevin Garnett era. Nevertheless, the early loss of Edwards tempered the energy. The Timberwolves took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Pacers 28-17 and drawing 11 fouls while committing only three.

With the win, Minnesota improves to 2-1, while Indiana falls to 0-3 after their opener was a double-overtime loss to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Looking ahead, Indiana will play at Dallas on Wednesday, and Minnesota will host Denver on Monday.

Boeing workers who make military aircraft and weapons reject latest offer, extending months-long strike

The strike by about 3,200 machinists at Boeing plants in Mascoutah, Illinois, and the Missouri cities of St. Louis and St. Charles is smaller in scale than last year’s walkout by 33,000 Boeing workers who assemble commercial jetliners. However, it threatens to complicate the aerospace company’s progress in regaining its financial footing.

“Boeing claimed they listened to their employees; the result of today’s vote proves they have not,” Brian Bryant, president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said in a statement.

Boeing responded by expressing disappointment over the vote’s outcome, noting that the result was close. The company stated it was increasingly hearing from workers “who want to cross the picket line” and “understand the value of our offer.”

“The union’s statement is misleading since the vote failed by the slimmest of margins, 51% to 49%,” the company’s statement read. “We are turning our focus to executing the next phase of our contingency plan in support of our customers.”

In contrast, the machinists’ union acknowledged the vote was close but emphasized in a message to members that “very few” workers have crossed the picket line. “Our solidarity remains strong, and the company’s claim otherwise is wrong,” the union said.

Union leaders report that talks have stalled over key issues such as wages and retirement benefits. Boeing has argued that workers’ demands exceed the cost of living adjustments appropriate for the Midwest.

Ahead of Sunday’s vote, the union advised members not to approve the company’s latest offer, citing a lack of “meaningful improvements” to retirement benefits and wage increases for more senior workers.

Negotiations escalated over the summer in the days leading up to the strike. Workers rejected an earlier proposed agreement that included a 20% wage hike over the life of the five-year contract.

Boeing quickly countered with a modified agreement that did not increase pay raises but removed a scheduling provision affecting workers’ ability to earn overtime pay. Workers rejected that offer as well and commenced the strike the following morning. They also voted against revised terms in September.

The company has stated it was prepared for a strike, with a contingency plan in place “to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers.”

Ravens’ Harbaugh calls the mix-up over Jackson’s injury status an ‘honest’ mistake

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh described his team’s injury list mix-up as an “honest mistake” after the organization initially listed quarterback Lamar Jackson as a full participant in practice on Friday, then retroactively changed his designation to limited the following day.

“Nobody’s trying to hide anything,” Harbaugh said following Baltimore’s 30-16 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. “There’s no advantage to be gained with that.”

On Friday, the Ravens reported Jackson as a full participant in practice and listed him as questionable for Sunday’s game. However, on Saturday, Baltimore ruled Jackson out for the game and clarified that he had actually been limited on Friday.

The team explained that although Jackson practiced “fully,” he did not take starter reps and therefore should have been listed as limited. According to NFL policy, full participation means completing 100% of a player’s normal repetitions.

“I’m not involved in those rules. I don’t know those particular rules,” Harbaugh said. “I think in their defense, he practiced a full practice. I think they felt like because he did the same number of reps it was a full practice, but when you dig in and you read the rule, at the end of the day it wasn’t right. As soon as we found out, we changed it.”

When asked who he was referring to as “they,” Harbaugh replied, “That’s in the training room, and the PR and the other side.”

Harbaugh also appeared uncertain about the available status designations on the injury report.

“I do think if we’d had the old status, maybe they would have said doubtful. Maybe? I don’t know,” he said. “But questionable or out, we weren’t going to say out because he wasn’t out until Saturday, when that conversation was had on the medical side.”

It is worth noting that “doubtful” remains a designation that can be used on NFL injury reports.

With Jackson sidelined, backup quarterback Tyler Huntley started in his place and led the Ravens to their highest-scoring game since Week 3 — the last time the team had Jackson available for a full game.

“We always prepare for Lamar,” Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus said. “Then when we found out he wasn’t playing, it was get ready for the next guy.”

Broncos HC Sean Payton Delivers Blunt Message Amid Pat Surtain II Injury

The Denver Broncos had little trouble dispatching the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, but concerns loom regarding the health of two-time First Team All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

### Injury Update on Pat Surtain II

Surtain left the game early in the first quarter due to an ankle injury but made a brief return during the Broncos’ next defensive series. Unfortunately, he exited again in the second quarter, this time with a shoulder injury that ultimately sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Official confirmation of his exit came during the third quarter.

### Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton Remains Tight-Lipped

Known for his durability, Surtain has missed just two career games with the Broncos since being selected No. 9 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. Both absences occurred in Week 18 of regular seasons, including last year when he was rested.

Following the game, Broncos head coach Sean Payton offered no concrete updates on Surtain’s condition. When asked about the secondary’s performance, Payton said, “Pretty good. Proud of them. Don’t like to see that happen. You never know when a player goes down. The next man is up. Not going to discuss any of the players that were injured at all, but I was proud of the guys that had to go play when someone went down.”

### Surtain’s Impact and Contract Extension

At 25 years old, Surtain is off to another strong start this season. Prior to this game, he allowed just a 53.3% completion rate in his coverage—the second-best mark of his career—with a quarterback rating allowed of 69.6, ranking third-best for him. Reflecting his elite status, the Broncos rewarded Surtain with a four-year, $96 million contract extension in September 2024.

Without Surtain, the Broncos’ secondary could face significant vulnerabilities, especially against high-powered offenses.

### Depth Concerns in the Secondary

The Broncos’ other key cornerbacks include starter Riley Moss, nickelback Ja’Quan McMillian, and rookie Jahdae Barron—the No. 20 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Barron recorded his first career interception on Sunday. Together, they allowed a combined 52.4% completion rate before Sunday’s game.

Against the Cowboys, these corners gave up seven completions on 14 targets, according to Pro Football Focus. Moss faced heavy attention, allowing six completions on 11 targets for 56 yards and committing two penalties. Second-year fifth-round pick Kris Abrams-Draine stepped in for Surtain, allowing 49 yards on four completions from four targets.

### Looking Ahead: Week 9 vs. Houston Texans

The Broncos will look to shore up their secondary as they visit the Houston Texans in Week 9. Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is coming off his first 300-yard passing game of the season, a win over the previously 5-2 San Francisco 49ers.

Entering Week 8, the Broncos ranked fourth in scoring defense and third overall—defensive rankings heavily influenced by Surtain’s presence. His health status remains critical as Denver moves forward this season.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for updates on Pat Surtain II’s recovery in the coming days.

Cunningham scores 25, helps Pistons overcome slow start and Brown’s 41 points to top Celtics 119-113

DETROIT (AP) — Cade Cunningham scored 25 points and Jalen Duren added 24 to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 119-113 victory over the Boston Celtics on Sunday.

The Celtics started strong, jumping out to a 14-2 lead in the opening minutes and building a lead as large as 17 points. However, Detroit battled back, with Ausar Thompson contributing 21 points and the Pistons dominating the boards to score 30 second-chance points. Thompson himself secured four of those crucial points in the closing minutes.

Boston’s defense tightened compared to their previous games, avoiding giving up 42 points in a quarter as they had in their first two losses. Nevertheless, Detroit managed to score a combined 70 points over the second and third quarters, allowing the Pistons to carry a 13-point lead into the fourth.

The Celtics pulled within four points with 1:13 remaining after Jaylen Brown hit two free throws. Brown led Boston with 41 points, while Payton Pritchard added 21, Derrick White had 15, and reserve Anfernee Simons chipped in 12. However, Tobias Harris stepped up for Detroit, scoring on an offensive rebound on the very next possession to help seal the win. Harris finished with 18 points, marking him as the Pistons’ fourth player in double figures.

Duren also dominated the glass with 17 rebounds, Thompson grabbed 12, and Cunningham dished out eight assists for Detroit.

The Celtics, adjusting to the absence of injured star Jayson Tatum and the departure of key players Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford, have now dropped their first three games of the season. On the other hand, the Pistons improved to two wins in a row following their season-opening loss at Chicago.

Ahead of the game, Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff emphasized the importance of NBA players and coaches being mindful about conversations outside their organizations that might carry gambling implications. The NBA’s gambling scandal remains a hot topic in Detroit, a city with a rich basketball history highlighted by Chauncey Billups, who helped the Pistons win the 2004 title and earned NBA Finals MVP honors.
