DeSantis, Democrats, environmentalists join forces to oppose new Gulf drilling

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. In a rare display of political alignment, Florida’s top Republicans, Democrats, environmental groups, and even some of President Donald Trump’s closest allies in the state are loudly rejecting the administration’s new plan to expand offshore drilling near Florida’s coast. Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has long insisted Florida’s beaches and military testing zones remain off-limits, renewed his warnings this week, urging Trump to stick with the protections he signed in 2020. DeSantis, Democrats, environmentalists join forces to oppose new Gulf drilling “Now what the Interior Department is proposing to do is really to go back off that policy,” said DeSantis, Friday. “I think that would weaken protections we worked really hard to establish offshore.” The Interior Department’s proposal would open new waters for oil and gas development, aiming to boost domestic production and lower prices. But in Florida, where drilling in state waters is already barred by the state constitution, the idea has landed with a thud. Military, Environment, and Bipartisan Pushback Opposition is emerging from every corner of the state’s political landscape. U. S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis, a Republican whose district includes major military installations, warned new rigs could jeopardize critical national security operations in the Eastern Gulf. “The right hand is not talking to the left hand,” Patronis said. ”The Department of the Interior is hard charging to try to drive down gas prices. So they’re trying to do everything they can to throw it and see what sticks to the wall.” State Trump administration announces plan for new oil drilling off Florida Matthew Daly and Matthew Brown Patronis argues drilling could disrupt hypersonic missile testing and other weapons development within the Gulf Test and Training Range. He’s circulated a letter to the White House, signed by most of Florida’s GOP delegation, reminding federal leaders that military testing and energy exploration “are not compatible.” It comes as environmental groups say the risks extend far beyond defense. “Floridians don’t want their treasure trashed,” said JP Brooker with Ocean Conservancy. He warns that drilling puts fisheries, sea turtles, beaches, and billions in tourism revenue at risk. “It’s a political no-brainer,” said Brooker. “The ocean in Florida is like corn. It’s like corn in Iowa, right? It’s something that you have to care about and care about supporting, regardless of your political background, if you want to have a chance of getting elected.” Democrats Also Sound the Alarm Democrats, too, say the plan is unnecessary and dangerous. “Big oil does not need any more help right now,” said U. S. Rep. Kathy Castor, Thursday evening. “They are doing fine and they hold over 2, 000 active leases in the Gulf already.” Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried called the proposal a “nonstarter,” pointing to memories of the Deepwater Horizon disaster just 15 years ago. National Politics Biden permanently bans offshore drilling in 625 million acres of ocean David Goldman, Ella Nilsen and Matt Egan, CNN “Florida has a long history of bipartisan support against drilling off our coastlines,” she said in a statement. “Our state’s fragile ecosystem and economy would be irreparably harmed if this proposal were to move forward.” A History of Avoiding Drilling Near Florida The bipartisan resistance echoes earlier victories for drilling opponents: In 2018, voters approved a constitutional amendment banning drilling in state waters. That same year, then-Gov. Rick Scott secured a pledge from Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke that Florida would be protected: “We are not drilling off the coast of Florida.” In 2020, Trump signed a memorandum extending the federal offshore drilling moratorium until 2032.

Will He Play Vs. Patriots?

It’s been a while since Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has played in a game, but that could change this Sunday with Burrow being a full participant in practice this week. The Bengals play against the 9-2 New England Patriots on Sunday. Joe Burrow’s Injury Status Ahead Of Bengals Vs. Patriots Burrow hasn’t played since Week 2, when he suffered a turf toe injury, and the Bengals desperately need Burrow back. Cincinnati is 2-0 with him as the starter and 1-7 without him. While Burrow is officially listed as questionable on the Bengals injury report, he’s trending in the right direction and performing at a high level in practice according to Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. “Joe’s been looking outstanding, man,” Higgins said on Thursday. “He’s slinging it deep, short routes. Everything’s been pretty good.” Higgins believes that Burrow is at 100% but wants Burrow to come back at his own pace. “He needs to take as much time as he needs, but I mean, he looks good,” Higgins said. “If he’s ready, then I’m ready.” Bengals coach Zac Taylor says the team isn’t ready to decide if Burrow is playing on Sunday. Taylor noted that the Bengals playing on Sunday and then again on Thursday at the Baltimore Ravens, is a factor. Two games in five days is rough on the bodies of healthy players, let alone a franchise quarterback coming back from injury. “I think Joe has done everything he can to put himself in a position to get back,” Taylor said. “We are just going to keep taking our time on this one. No decision has been made. I feel comfortable waiting as long as we can to make this decision.” Although the 3-7 Bengals have just a 1% chance of making the playoffs, per NFL Next Gen Stats, Taylor doesn’t see that factoring into the decision to start Burrow or sit him. “I think it’s important. Winning is important,” Taylor said. “Obviously, he is who he is, and he gives us an outstanding chance to win games. And I think for his own he wants to play football. That’s he’s a football player. That’s what he wants to be also.” While Taylor’s optimistic that his toe injury won’t be reaggravated once Burrow returns to the field, he’s still being cautious with his confidence about it. “He’s done everything he can. He looks great. You expect it to respond great when he’s out there and gets tackled, but you don’t know,” Taylor said. Will Burrow Be Activated Vs. Patriots? The Bengals will have to activate Burrow by 4 p. m. ET Saturday if he’s to have a chance to play against the Patriots. However, Taylor said there’s a chance Burrow could be activated and still not play. “Everything is on the table,” Taylor said. Burrow, 28, had a stellar 2024 campaign, throwing for 43 touchdowns and 4, 918 yards, but all the progress made then has been offset by an injury setback this season. Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and even if the Bengals postseason chances are slim to none, his return to action will be a positive development for the league.

Big Event posts update following AJ Lee AI controversy

WWE Superstar AJ Lee made her return to RAW earlier this week, costing Becky Lynch the Women’s Intercontinental Championship against Maxxine Dupri. While it was an exciting moment, which should’ve led to a week of trying to figure out Lee’s next move, the segment was sadly overshadowed thanks to a strange YouTube upload. Ad AJ Lee has unfortunately found herself a subject of debate online. The WWE Superstar recently appeared at The Big Event NY on November 15th, meeting fans and signing autographs. One fan used the experience to create an AI video of himself kissing Lee, leading to justified outrage throughout the week. Thanks for the submission! After banning the perpetrator, The Big Event made a statement regarding shows going forward. The convention is putting its foot down in an attempt to make sure nothing like this happens again. Ad Trending “As most have you have seen The Big Event has been making headlines for the past 48 hours for the wrong reasons. This isn’t a discussion regarding the positive or negative uses of AI, but if you use AI or any other type of manipulation to misrepresent the experience you had at the show that paints our guests or our fans in a negative or compromising way, you will be banned from all future events, one strike, no appeal. We want everyone who comes to have a memorable experience, a REAL memorable experience, and not create a false narrative that ruins future opportunities and moments for our fans. Thank You. BigEvent Staff.” Ad AJ Lee asked for the removal of the controversial AI video Fan Chris Horror posted an AI video of himself and WWE Superstar AJ Lee using a photo he got at The Big Event NY on November 15th. The video shows the fan kissing Lee in a, frankly, strange and disturbing attempt to show appreciation for the former Divas Champion.

Guest Commentary | Get Over It: What grieving children hear — and why we must do better

There are more than 56, 000 children grieving a parent or sibling in our region, enough to fill Hertz Arena eight times over. “Get over it.” That’s what many grieving children at Valerie’s House tell us they’ve been told by people in their lives. Others hear things like, “It’s been a year,” or “Stop using your loss as an excuse.” The hurtful comments seem endless. But some of the most painful words come from their own peers: “If I were your dad, I would’ve killed myself, too,” or “At least my mom answers me when I talk to her and isn’t dead.” Bullying around grief is heartbreakingly common. Too often, bullies target what they see as a weakness, isolating those who are different, labeling them as “weird” or “less than.” Most grief-related bullying happens at school. While teachers are becoming more grief-informed, many still lack the tools to respond effectively. Some children have shared that when struggling academically after a loss, they were told to “move on” or “stop using your loss as an excuse.” While often well-intentioned, these comments can feel invalidating to a grieving child. November is National Children’s Grief Awareness Month and it’s vital to understand the death of a loved one, especially a parent or sibling, is scientifically proven to change a child’s brain chemistry. Research conducted in 2024 by the American Brain Foundation shows grief and trauma literally change a child’s brain, affecting memory, concentration, and emotional regulation. Compassionate support and connection, however, can help the brain heal and rewire itself and that’s why Valerie’s House plays an integral role in a grieving child’s life Children and teens aren’t the only ones trying to find a new normal after loss. Grieving adults often face misunderstanding, isolation, and sometimes discrimination when returning to work. At Valerie’s House, we’ve met countless widows and widowers who were terminated from their jobs because, after the standard three bereavement days, they were expected to return as the same person they were before their loss. Businesses must continue operating; however, at the same time many employers are not equipped to support bereaved employees. Having job-protected leave after a traumatic loss would mean the employee wouldn’t have to choose between mourning and losing their job. It acknowledges grief as a legitimately disruptive life event affecting performance, mental health, and economic stability. When I first shared my vision for a special place where grieving families could heal together, people would ask, “Does it really happen to that many children?” My answer was (and still is) a resounding yes it happens every day. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model, 1 in 10 Florida children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the age of 18. In Southwest Florida, the numbers aren’t improving as we are experiencing the highest recorded numbers of childhood grief our region has ever seen. Although these numbers continue to sadden me, I am not shocked. I was one of those children. In July 1987, when I was 10 years old, my mother died in a car accident on her way to pick up my sister and me from summer camp in Fort Myers. She was a nurse, a loving wife, and a devoted mother. None of us knew when she dropped us off that morning, it would be our last moments together. My family experienced the same confusion that our children at Valerie’s House share today: isolation, and misplaced expectations from those who couldn’t relate with us. Research proves that children experiencing the loss of a parent or sibling are at an increased risk of substance abuse, suicide, and incarceration. Receiving grief support services from places like Valerie’s House, however, mitigates that risk. Since hosting our first group of 20 children in 2016 in a rented space in downtown Fort Myers, to owning our home thanks to hundreds of supporters on land donated by the city of Fort Myers, Valerie’s House has now reached more than 7, 500 individuals in less than 10 years. As we reflect during National Children’s Grief Awareness Month, let us recognize that to truly change outcomes, we must change the conversation around grief. Valerie’s House has created helpful ways to talk to someone who is grieving, tools that we live by and share with the community. We’ve also dedicated our mission to helping train schools, health care workers, and first responders on how to best talk to a child after learning a loved one has died. For example, should a teacher tell the class that a student’s parent has died? We always say: Ask the child first. Always give the child a choice. Valerie’s House is also here to help local employers, such as after an employee dies. One recent request came from a local developer: “We lost an employee of 25 years. How do we support our staff and honor her memory?” Valerie’s House therapists came directly to the workplace and walked the CEO and his team through a group activity which led to honest, healing conversations between staff and leadership. As with everything we do for our community, Valerie’s House training and support groups, no matter where they are held, are at no cost. We’ll come to you, or your team can visit the Valerie’s House Family Is Forever Home in Fort Myers, a space dedicated to community training, open dialogue, and learning how to support those grieving among us. To invite the Valerie’s House team to train your school staff, company, or medical office on how to become grief-informed, contact Kathy Burg, Program Operations Manager, at kathy@valerieshouse. org. In the meantime, for a list of what to say and what not to say when someone is grieving, visit valerieshouse. org. About Valerie’s House: Valerie’s House opened its first location in Fort Myers in January 2016 and has served more than 7, 500 children and their families in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, and Sarasota counties. The not-for-profit organization provides a safe, comfortable place for children to share, grieve and heal together following the death of a close family member. Valerie’s House has three Southwest Florida locations and expanded into northwest Florida in 2021 with a home in downtown Pensacola. Valerie’s House is a United Way partner agency and is fully supported by community donations. For more information on Valerie’s House, or to make a donation, please visit valerieshouse. org. Angela Melvin is the founder and CEO of Valerie’s House, the first organization in Southwest Florida created in 2016 solely to help children grieve the loss of a loved one. A fourth-generation native of Southwest Florida, Angela is a University of Florida graduate and former television reporter. She lost her mother, Valerie, in a car accident in Fort Myers in 1987 at 10 years old. That loss shaped her life and ultimately inspired the mission behind Valerie’s House.
