Broncos’ JL Skinner ‘ready for the moment’ with game-changing blocked punt vs. Raiders

JL Skinner’s facemask made embattled special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi look good and secured the Broncos an ugly but vital win.

Skinner burst through the line late in the third quarter and blocked AJ Cole’s punt with his helmet, setting up the Broncos for what ultimately became the game-winning field goal in a 10-7, hard-fought victory over the Raiders on Thursday at Empower Field.

It was perhaps the biggest play of the third-year pro’s career. In this game, Rizzi moved Skinner from the outside of the line to the inside to better capitalize on the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder’s length and physicality.

“That’s something I’ve been working on all week at practice—taking advantage of that tackle and trying to get off the ball fast,” Skinner said. “I was ready for the moment. I was thinking about that play all day.”

With 1:36 left in the third quarter and the Raiders facing a fourth-and-16 on their own 14-yard line in a tie game, Skinner lined up inside of Devon Key on the right side of the line. He dipped his shoulder and used a drive-and-crank technique to force his way into the backfield, then split two of the Raiders’ gunners, who were tied up with other blocks, to get to Cole.

Skinner missed the ball with his outstretched right arm as it left Cole’s foot but was close enough that the ball clanged off Skinner’s facemask and visor instead. The ball was then recovered by Tyler Badie, who ran it back to the 11-yard line, setting up Will Lutz’s 32-yard field goal four plays later.

“I didn’t know where the ball was at initially,” Skinner said. “I thought I missed it, and I was just hoping it hit something. After realizing it was blocked, I thought it hit my hand at first, then I saw my visor, and it had a mark from the ball on it. That’s when I knew.

“It was a heads-up play or, I’ll say, a head-butt play.”

On a night when the Broncos offense sputtered and Rizzi’s special teams had several face-palm moments, Skinner’s block was the bailout and the differentiator that underscored a dominating defensive performance.

Rookie punter Jeremy Crawshaw had a rough night with two shanked punts of 30 and 36 yards, along with a squib kick that made it seem like Crawshaw had a case of the yips. The erratic punting was the latest chapter in the Broncos’ ongoing special teams saga that came to a head over the last two weeks in wins over Dallas and Houston.

Rizzi’s unit had an array of errors in both games, including a communication mishap that preceded a concussion for All-Pro returner Marvin Mims Jr. against the Cowboys, as well as multiple players running out late on special teams during the game against the Texans.

But following Skinner’s momentum-changing block on Thursday and another game-winning field goal from kicker Will Lutz, defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers said the Broncos are choosing to see the unit’s performance through a glass-half-full lens.

For Skinner, a primary special teamer who has appeared in 26 NFL games with no starts and only a handful of plays at safety, he hopes Thursday’s highlight acts as a trampoline for him for the rest of the season.

“Special teams is one of those things that nobody wants to talk about until it’s something bad,” Franklin-Myers said. “But tonight, JL showed he’s a consistent player who plays with a physicality that people don’t want to match. He’s one of the engines that makes the special teams go.”

Linebacker Jonathon Cooper and defensive lineman Zach Allen, who helped Franklin-Myers contribute to the Broncos’ six sacks against the Raiders, agreed, even as Cooper acknowledged the unit has areas to clean up.

“(Special teams) made a big play in a big-time moment,” Allen said, “and that’s all we can ask for.”

The FAA’s order to cut flights nationwide due to the government shutdown is set to take effect

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected 40 airports across more than two dozen states for mandatory flight reductions, according to a recent order. These include major hubs such as Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, North Carolina. In several metropolitan areas—including New York, Houston, Chicago, and Washington—multiple airports will be affected, with ripple effects likely extending to smaller airports as well.

In anticipation of the FAA’s official order, airlines scrambled to adjust their schedules and began canceling flights Thursday. Travelers planning weekend and future trips waited nervously to learn if their flights would depart as scheduled. As of now, more than 780 flights have been canceled nationwide, according to FlightAware.

Delta Air Lines reported plans to cancel roughly 170 flights Friday, while American Airlines expects to cut 220 flights per day through Monday. The FAA stated that the reductions will start at 4% and ramp up to 10% by November 14. These measures will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and impact all commercial airlines.

The FAA says the cutbacks are necessary to help relieve pressure on air traffic controllers, many of whom have been working without pay for more than a month. Many controllers are now working six-day weeks with mandatory overtime, leading to increasing callouts as financial strain and exhaustion mount.

“You can’t expect people to go in to work when they’re not getting a paycheck,” said Kelly Matthews of Flat Rock, Michigan, a frequent business traveler who has canceled most of her upcoming trips. “It’s not that they don’t want to do the job, but you can’t afford to pay for gas, your day care, and everything else.”

The order comes as the Trump administration increases pressure on Democrats in Congress to end the ongoing shutdown. Airlines have pledged to try to minimize the impact on customers, with some focusing on slashing routes to and from small and medium-sized cities.

Carriers are required to refund customers whose flights are canceled, but according to the Department of Transportation, they are not obligated to cover secondary costs such as food and hotel accommodations unless a delay or cancellation results from a factor within the airlines’ control.

Industry analyst Henry Harteveldt warned the reductions will “have a noticeable impact across the U.S. air transportation system.” The cuts could also slow package delivery services, as two affected airports—FedEx in Memphis, Tennessee, and UPS in Louisville, Kentucky—serve as major distribution centers. Notably, Louisville is also the site of this week’s deadly cargo plane crash.

New Zealand Dollar drifts lower below 0.5650 as China’s Trade Surplus narrows in October

The NZD/USD pair is attracting some sellers near the 0.5620 level during the Asian trading hours on Friday. The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has weakened against the US Dollar (USD) following a narrowing of China’s trade surplus in October and a disappointing New Zealand jobs report. Traders are also bracing for the flash U-Mich Consumer Sentiment survey scheduled for later on Friday.

Data released by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China showed that China’s trade surplus narrowed to $90.07 billion in October, down from $90.45 billion previously. This figure fell short of the forecasted $95.60 billion. Meanwhile, exports rose by just 1.1% year-over-year in October, missing expectations for a 3.0% gain. Imports increased by 1.0% year-over-year, a sharp decline from 7.4% in September and below the market consensus of 3.2%.

The narrowing of China’s trade surplus could weigh on the New Zealand Dollar, often seen as a proxy for China, given that China is one of New Zealand’s major trading partners.

Adding to the NZD’s weakness, New Zealand’s unemployment rate climbed to 5.3% in the third quarter (Q3), marking its highest level since 2016. This weak jobs report has strengthened the case for a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) this month, putting additional selling pressure on the NZD. Most economists now expect a 25 basis points (bps) reduction at the RBNZ’s final meeting of the year, scheduled for November 26.

On the US side, Challenger jobs data indicated a sharp increase in job cuts, suggesting a possible cooling in the US labor market. The report revealed that companies cut over 150,000 jobs in October, marking the biggest reduction for the month in more than 20 years.

Following the release of the Challenger jobs data, traders have ramped up bets on a rate cut in the US, which has weighed on the Greenback against the NZD. Trading in Fed funds futures now implies a 70% probability of a rate reduction at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting, up from 62% a day earlier, according to the CME FedWatch tool.

Overall, the combination of weaker Chinese trade data, a disappointing New Zealand jobs report, and signs of softening in the US labor market is influencing price action in the NZD/USD pair as traders adjust their expectations ahead of key upcoming economic releases.

Voya Corporate Leaders Trust Fund B Q3 2025 Commentary

**Nov. 06, 2025 | 11:15 PM ET**
**Voya Corporate Leaders Trust Fund Series B (LEXCX)**
*By Voya Investment Management*

### Market Overview: Q3 2025 Recap

Equity markets rebounded strongly in the third quarter of 2025, recovering from the tariff-driven volatility seen in April. Markets closed well above mid-year levels, reflecting renewed investor confidence.

As we approach the final stretch of the year, investors continue to navigate persistent geopolitical tensions, policy uncertainty, and inflation risks that could influence market dynamics going forward.

### Market Drivers

The rally was primarily fueled by strong performance in technology and artificial intelligence-related stocks. Additionally, a shift toward easing monetary policy helped lift markets higher.

However, certain portfolio decisions impacted returns. Notably, an overweight position in Union Pacific Corp. detracted from performance, as did the decision not to hold shares in Apple Inc. and NVIDIA Corp., two of the quarter’s best-performing stocks.

### Economic and Corporate Outlook

Solid economic data combined with strong corporate earnings have reinforced the attractiveness of U.S. assets. The prospect of easing monetary policies adds further support, helping to offset concerns related to inflation and geopolitical risks.

### A Time-Tested Approach to U.S. Blue-Chips

No. 3 UF routs North Florida by 40 as Gators bounce back from Arizona loss

GAINESVILLE, Florida — The Florida Gators bounced back from a season-opening loss to Arizona with a vengeance, delivering a dominant defensive performance and a standout game from All-America candidate Alex Condon, who was sorely missed in Monday night’s matchup in Las Vegas.

North Florida never really stood a chance as the Gators rolled to a commanding 104-64 victory on Thursday night, just days after dropping their 93-87 opener. Despite the lopsided score, national championship vibes were palpable at the O’Connell Center.

A packed crowd of 10,065 fans roared with excitement before tip-off as the school unveiled the 2025 championship banner, now proudly hanging in the rafters on the stadium’s east side.

Although the Gators had a clear talent advantage and the energy in the building was electric, North Florida fought hard early on. The teams traded the lead six times in the first five minutes before Florida steadily pulled away and locked down defensively.

The Ospreys struggled offensively, shooting just 31%, while the Gators shot an efficient 49% from the floor. With the win, Florida extended its home opener winning streak to 35 games, a streak dating back to a narrow 76-74 loss to Texas in 1990 during coach Lon Kruger’s first season.

Alex Condon led the charge with 25 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 10 rebounds, marking his 10th career double-double. He also contributed four assists, three blocks, two steals, and committed just one turnover. This impressive performance was a sharp turnaround after his difficult game in Las Vegas, where against Arizona the 6-foot-11, 230-pound Australian and preseason AP first-team All-America managed only 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, recorded a career-high six turnovers, and was outmuscled by true freshman Koa Peat, who scored 30 points.

Backup center Micah Handlogten also made a strong impact, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Thomas Haugh added 12 points and eight rebounds as the Gators dominated the glass with a 64-24 rebounding advantage and outscored North Florida 66-22 in the paint.

Florida’s dominance inside was the key to the victory, but fans wanted to see the Gators go even bigger under the basket. With the game well in hand, the crowd began chanting for 7-foot-9 freshman Olivier Rioux.

Responding to the fans with the score at 102-61 and 2:09 remaining, coach Todd Golden put Rioux into the game, making him the tallest player to ever play in a college basketball game.
