Saugus Speedway scoreboard circles back to Santa Clarita History Center

The Saugus Speedway scoreboard is making its way back home to the Santa Clarita History Center at Hart Park after the Valley Relics Museum in Van Nuys acquired it in 2017. The famed Saugus Speedway had its last race on the track in 1995. Leon Worden, a local historian and site manager of the History Center, which is operated by the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society, said the History Center began collecting artifacts of the speedway over the summer. The former speedway site is being replaced by a new mixed-use development. “We recovered all of the big, heavy artifacts that were left at the Saugus Speedway, including the main entry sign and the signage around the track, including one of the 90-foot-long sign sections that said Saugus Speedway, and many other things,” Worden said. Worden said that the speedway meant a lot to people in the SCV and San Fernando Valley during its prime. “It’s a connection for a lot of people; it’s a connection to their youth. And I think that is, I think, well . it’s meaningful on a personal level to a lot of people,” Worden said. “This year, the Saugus Speedway is the No. 1 thing that our visitors talk about and ask about.” When asked what it feels like for the History Center to get the scoreboard back, Worden said it was “icing on the cake.” “The Saugus scoreboard is 24 feet long and 9 feet high. And just so you know, we’re looking at receiving it. We received donations from the community to cover Valley Relics’ own expenses. But we’re looking at doing this over the course of the next few months,” Worden said about when the nonprofit organization will have the scoreboard. Jim Insolo, a former race car driver who raced on the speedway, recalled one of his first memories of being at the track. “I kind of was working on a guy’s car before I ever raced. And I asked him if I could drive his car in one of the heat races, hoping that he would say no after I’d asked him,” Insolo said. “And he says, ‘Go ahead,’ so then I kind of had my foot in my mouth, and I had to go ahead and do it then and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.” Insolo said the experience made him want to pursue it as a career. “The thrill of the whole thing, you know what I mean? And out there with all those other cars and trying to be the best and win the race if you could. And it was just, there was just so many things about it, the highs and the lows of it all,” Insolo said. Insolo said it was very cool for the History Center to preserve the artifacts, so it keeps the speedway’s memory alive. “It’s a neat deal they’re doing that, so the younger people that didn’t really ever know it as a racetrack, you know, for being able to see what it was all about,” Insolo said. “They had those kind of whatever they’re going to build over there now, and you would never know it was a racetrack when you drive by there now. And it’s to keep that history alive of that racetrack.”.

Chaim Bloom reflects on Mookie Betts trade more than 5 years later

Chaim Bloom is settling into his new role as the St. Louis Cardinals’ president of baseball operations ahead of a busy offseason. However, the 42-year-old baseball executive will also be remembered as a central figure in an infamous chapter of Red Sox history.

Appointed as Dave Dombrowski’s successor as Boston’s chief baseball officer in October 2019, one of Bloom’s first orders of business with the Red Sox was to determine the future of franchise star Mookie Betts. Unable to come to terms on a long-term extension with Betts, Bloom and the Red Sox ultimately traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in February 2020. The trade also included David Price going to the Dodgers, with Boston receiving Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong in return.

The move proved disastrous for Boston. Betts went on to win three World Series titles, earn four All-Star selections, and secure several top-five finishes for the National League MVP over his six seasons with the Dodgers. Among the players Boston received, only Connor Wong remains on the Red Sox roster as a backup catcher. Alex Verdugo was eventually traded to the New York Yankees after the 2023 season. Jeter Downs appeared in just 14 career games with Boston and last played in MLB in 2023.

Speaking to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas, Bloom expressed that his stance on trading Betts has not changed despite Betts’ incredible success with the Dodgers.

“It’s never fun to take a player of that caliber in the prime of his career that I had seen right in my face as an opponent for so many years with the Rays, then be on the same side as him very briefly and end up moving him,” Bloom said. “Obviously, there was a bigger picture than that deal. That deal wasn’t about the valuation of the talent. It was just about where the organization was.”

Bloom was eventually fired in September 2023 after the Red Sox posted a combined 267-262 record during his four seasons and made only one postseason appearance. Still, Bloom maintains an affinity for Boston, especially with several players drafted under his tenure—such as Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, and Connelly Early—emerging as key pieces for the Red Sox in 2025 and beyond.

“It’s cool to see them, in a lot of cases, start turning into and in other cases, continuing to be the players we thought they could be,” Bloom said. “Even in just four years in that organization, I developed a lot of really strong relationships and friends for life. Some people that I care about that I was really happy to see enjoy pieces of that success.

“I’m proud of a lot of the things we did in Boston. It has been exciting from afar to see that work come to fruition. Bigger things continue to be ahead for that franchise.”

Cubs Extend Qualifying Offers to Shota Imanaga, Kyle Tucker

The Chicago Cubs made both a no-brainer and a questionable decision Thursday regarding their 2026 roster moves.

Chicago extended a qualifying offer (QO) to both starting pitcher Shota Imanaga and outfielder Kyle Tucker. This year’s qualifying offer is valued at $22.05 million. If both players decline the offer, the Cubs will receive compensatory draft picks in return.

Extending the qualifying offer to Kyle Tucker was an easy decision. It’s an almost guaranteed way for Chicago to secure an extra draft pick. Tucker is expected to command close to $400 million in free agency, making the chances of him accepting the Cubs’ $22.05 million offer roughly 0.0001%.

On the other hand, the qualifying offer to Shota Imanaga was more surprising given the current situation between him and the organization. Just a few days prior, the Cubs declined a $15 million option on Imanaga’s contract, which allowed the left-hander the opportunity to pick up a $15 million option of his own. Unexpectedly, Imanaga declined that option, choosing to become a free agent after only two seasons in Chicago.

It’s a bit shocking that the Cubs would essentially offer Imanaga a $7 million pay raise after his struggles in the second half of the season. Considering his performance, it’s unlikely Imanaga would command more than $22.05 million in free agency, which makes it plausible that he might accept the qualifying offer and spend at least one more season with Chicago.

Declining the option may place Imanaga in a challenging position this winter as he looks to sign his second Major League Baseball contract.

The most likely outcome appears to be Tucker declining his qualifying offer, while Imanaga accepts his, giving the Cubs one extra pick in next year’s MLB draft.

Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland dies at 24

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away Thursday morning, the team announced.

“It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning. Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family,” the team said in a statement. He was 24 years old.

The Cowboys have not disclosed any details regarding the cause of Kneeland’s death.

Kneeland was the Cowboys’ second-round pick out of Western Michigan in the 2024 NFL Draft, selected 56th overall. In Monday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, he scored the Cowboys’ first touchdown by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone.

The team is currently on their bye week and is not scheduled to return to practice until Monday.

During the 2024 season, Kneeland missed two games due to injury but was credited with 15 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, and six quarterback hurries. As a rookie in 2023, he missed six games with a knee injury but still recorded 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, 13 quarterback pressures, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery.

Before joining the NFL, Kneeland set records at Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, for tackles, sacks, and tackles for loss. During his college career at Western Michigan, he played in 38 games and amassed 27.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three pass deflections.

In 2023, Kneeland earned second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors, finishing the season with 57 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss in just nine games.

Kneeland is the second Dallas Cowboys player to pass away during the season in recent years. In 2012, linebacker Jerry Brown died in a car crash in which teammate Josh Brent was driving.

The Cowboys organization, players, and fans mourn the loss of Marshawn Kneeland and extend their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman on A.J. Brown: ‘You just don’t get rid of guys like that’

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman wanted to keep his post-trade deadline press conference focused solely on the players coming in to help boost the team. However, a question about A.J. Brown’s status within the organization seemed inevitable, given all the whispers and rumors surrounding the star receiver in recent weeks—regardless of their validity.

When the topic was raised by the press, Roseman refrained from commenting on whether the Eagles had received any trade offers for Brown ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET league deadline, or if any offers had been entertained. One thing is clear: A.J. Brown is still with the team.

Brown is expected to be back and ready to play following a hamstring injury, having received 15 days off during the bye week. Roseman emphasized that the Eagles need Brown if they truly want to compete for a Super Bowl repeat.

“I think that when you’re trying to be a great team, it’s hard to trade great players, and A.J. Brown is a great player,” Roseman said. “He wears [a captain’s C] for a reason. He’s an important part of this team, of this organization. He cares about winning, he cares about his teammates, and I think that when you’re a team like ours, that is looking forward to an opportunity to compete for a championship, you just don’t get rid of guys like that. So feel very lucky to have him on our team, and excited about the second half of the season with him.”

Since arriving in Philadelphia in 2022, Brown has been a commanding threat in the Eagles’ passing game and played a crucial role in their dominant run to a Super Bowl title last season. However, this season has been somewhat unusual.

There have been stretches and games where the Eagles struggled to get the ball to Brown. His perceived frustration, alongside a few cryptic social media posts without explanation, led fans and even some anonymous NFL executives to speculate that there might be deeper issues within the team.

Despite the rumors, the Eagles—from players to coaches and now up to Roseman—have consistently insisted on Brown’s importance to their operation. His continued presence on the roster backs that up.

Brown missed Week 8’s win over the Giants due to the hamstring injury but made a huge impact the week before against the Vikings in Minnesota, recording four catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. He is expected to be healthy and ready to return for the Eagles’ Week 10 road matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Monday night.

Former NBA All-Star Wants Grizzlies to Trade Ja Morant

A former NBA All-Star has called for Ja Morant to be traded from the Memphis Grizzlies, drawing clear parallels between his own public trade situation in 2017 and that of the 2019 No. 2 overall pick.

DeMarcus Cousins appeared on the “Run It Back” podcast on November 3 and shared his thoughts on the developing Morant situation. “It’s time to move on. This ship has sailed,” Cousins stated. “The Grizzlies have made their decision as to who they’re siding with when they decided to suspend Ja Morant. This was a coaching staff that was brought in with a militant style of coaching. It doesn’t blend well with everybody, and it doesn’t blend well with modern basketball.”

The Grizzlies suspended Morant for one game on November 1 for “conduct detrimental to the team” after he appeared to criticize the coaching staff following a 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, Morant has become the subject of swirling trade rumors.

### Ja Morant’s Struggles to Begin the Season

Morant’s performance during the loss to the Lakers on October 31 was uninspired; he scored just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field. When reporters questioned him about his performance, he repeatedly deflected, directing attention toward the coaching staff.

“Go ask the coaching staff why,” Morant said when asked whether he was lacking his usual energy. “According to them, don’t play me. That was the message after [the game].”

The 2025-26 season has been a difficult start for Morant, his first full year playing under new Grizzlies head coach Tuomas Iisalo. Through six games, he is averaging 20.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds—all below his 2024-25 season averages. Morant is also struggling from beyond the arc, shooting just 15.6% from three-point range.

Iisalo was hired as the Grizzlies head coach after serving as interim following the firing of Taylor Jenkins last season. A native of Finland, Iisalo brings extensive coaching experience from Europe, including a head coaching stint at Paris Basketball. Morant, meanwhile, spent his first six NBA seasons playing under Jenkins.

### DeMarcus Cousins’ Falling Out With the Kings

Cousins has his own history of being traded after a deteriorating relationship with his original team. While with the Sacramento Kings, he was suspended for one game by the NBA on February 7, 2017, after accruing 16 technical fouls in just 50 games—an NBA record for the earliest automatic suspension.

Initially, the Kings claimed Cousins would not be traded, but on February 19, 2017, he was dealt to the New Orleans Pelicans. The organization cited concerns about extending Cousins’ contract given his history of technical fouls as a motivating factor behind the trade.

“It was time for a change and I decided this was the best direction for the organization,” Kings general manager Vlade Divac said in a team-issued statement. “Winning begins with culture and character matters.”

### What This Means for Morant and the Grizzlies

Cousins is clearly siding with Morant in this case, believing that Memphis will be unable to maximize the guard’s skillset under its new coaching staff. With tensions high and trade rumors mounting, Morant’s situation could be headed toward a similar outcome as Cousins’ time with the Kings.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on the Grizzlies’ front office and coaching staff to see if they can resolve the issues or if a trade will become inevitable.

Underrated Max Muncy atop Dodgers’ all-time postseason homer list

**Max Muncy Becomes Dodgers’ All-Time Postseason Home Run Leader**

*LOS ANGELES* — Max Muncy isn’t the Dodgers player many would guess as the franchise’s all-time postseason home run leader, but it all adds up. As the team’s longest-tenured position player, Muncy has shined for the Dodgers during a period of prosperity — with more postseason rounds than ever — that rivals or even surpasses any in club history.

On Saturday, in Game 2 of the World Series, Muncy delivered his 15th career postseason homer, extending his all-time Dodgers lead.

“Being at the top of anything in this organization is really hard for me to wrap my head around,” Muncy said Sunday before a workout at Dodger Stadium. “It’s a really historically significant franchise; a lot of tremendous players and Hall of Famers have come out of this organization. Just to be able to top that category means a lot.”

Muncy, who has played for the Dodgers since 2018, claimed the top spot alone with a homer during the NLCS that moved him ahead of Justin Turner and Corey Seager. He has played 74 postseason games for the Dodgers.

In comparison, Duke Snider — who ranks fourth on the all-time Dodgers list with 11 postseason homers — played only 36 postseason games, all in the World Series.

In a lineup featuring stars like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman, it might be easy to overlook Muncy, but that’s not recommended.

“Everyone does focus on the top of the lineup,” Muncy said. “But that’s where we have been able to win so many games — it’s not always necessarily the top that’s doing the damage for us. It’s just the depth we have in the lineup.

“That is something I have always been proud to be a part of. Doc [Roberts] can slot me wherever he feels like it. I am not a guy that has an ego up there, and wherever he feels like it helps the lineup out the best, he puts me in, and I take pride in that.”

Meanwhile, Bo Bichette, who returned to the Blue Jays lineup for Game 1 of the World Series after missing seven weeks with a left knee sprain, will start again at second base on Monday, according to manager John Schneider. Bichette was on the bench for Game 2.

Capitals assistant coach fired after domestic abuse investigation

The Washington Capitals have started their defense of the Metropolitan Division title with a 6-3-0 record in the 2025-26 NHL season. However, an NHL investigation concluded on Sunday has resulted in significant changes to Spencer Carbery’s coaching staff.

The Capitals have fired assistant coach Mitch Love following an NHL investigation into domestic abuse accusations. According to Frank Seravalli, “Sources say NHL has suspended [Capitals] assistant coach Mitch Love for the entirety of the 2025-26 season following an investigation into alleged domestic abuse. The victim reported allegations directly to the NHL and teams Love interviewed with over the summer for head coach vacancies.”

In response to the findings, the Capitals released a statement via their official public relations social media account: “Mitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The organization is committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability.”

Mitch Love joined the Capitals coaching staff in the 2023-24 season when Spencer Carbery took over as head coach. Prior to his tenure in Washington, Love spent time as head coach of the Stockton Heat and Calgary Wranglers, both American Hockey League (AHL) teams.

Seravalli also noted that Love had been considered for NHL head coaching positions last summer, but these allegations affected his opportunities. The Capitals placed Love on leave on September 14, when the investigation began. While specific details of the allegations have not been disclosed, both the NHL and the team deemed the findings serious enough to warrant his suspension and termination.

Love will be eligible to seek new employment in the NHL after the 2025-26 season. However, this investigation has already impacted his career prospects and will likely continue to affect any future job opportunities.

The Washington Capitals are set to return to action on Tuesday with a road game against the Dallas Stars.
