‘The Rookie’ Doesn’t Know What To Do With Bailey and Season 8 Proves It

It was pretty exciting when Jenna Dewan joined ABC’s *The Rookie* back in its third season. As Bailey Nune, Dewan injected some fresh energy into the cast. Bailey is an interesting character because there are so many sides to her. She’s a firefighter/EMS in the Los Angeles Fire Department, a 1st Lieutenant reserve in the Army National Guard, and can always defend herself since she teaches capoeira (a type of martial art). She has some zany ideas, but that makes her a perfect match for the more straight-laced John Nolan (Nathan Fillion).

But now that *The Rookie* has entered its eighth season, it’s easy to see that the series has absolutely no clue what to do with her character now that she and Nolan are married.

### Bailey’s Storylines No Longer Make Any Sense on *The Rookie*

Bailey hasn’t always felt out of place with *The Rookie* crew. She’s played an instrumental role in several of Nolan’s investigations and was even part of one of the show’s most intense storylines when her sociopath ex-husband, Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), re-entered her life in Season 7.

In that plot, Bailey takes matters into her own hands and enlists the help of the notorious hitman, Malvado (Jimmy Gonzales), to take Jason out. This storyline was an intriguing way to gain more insight into Bailey’s character and revealed some moral ambiguity. As a survivor of domestic abuse at Jason’s hands, we learned much more about Bailey’s traumatic past.

The series also explored Bailey’s journey into motherhood, which offered a relatable and heartfelt storyline for viewers.

However, now that we’re in Season 8, it seems like *The Rookie* has no idea how to further develop Bailey’s character.

When she is included in the action alongside her husband, it often feels completely illogical. Case in point: in the premiere episode, which aired on January 6, Bailey tags along with the Mid-Wilshire crew and Nolan on an international sting operation. But it seems like the writers have forgotten she’s a firefighter, not a cop, making it unrealistic that she would be part of such a mission.

Sure, Bailey knows how to defend herself, but she doesn’t add anything meaningful to these scenes—only a frustrating sense of silliness. There’s no plausible way a regular civilian wife would just accompany her husband on a top-secret, dangerous mission.

### *The Rookie* Needs to Figure Out Another Plan for Bailey

We’re not advocating for *The Rookie* to have Bailey play second fiddle to Nolan. Portraying her as nothing more than a wife does a disservice to Bailey’s wide array of talents.

Perhaps the writers could develop a storyline where Bailey realizes she wants to pursue becoming a police officer. Entering the force as the newest rookie would offer plenty of interesting storylines and align well with the overall theme of the series.

It’s not that Jenna Dewan isn’t a capable actor; rather, the material *The Rookie* writers have given Bailey either feels boring or totally inauthentic. Bailey often “pops in” to save the day, but rarely in a way that feels organic to the storytelling. Moreover, she seldom faces consequences for her actions, especially concerning the Jason/Malvado plot, which makes her choices seem unfair.

If the writers don’t come up with an authentic, exciting story arc for Bailey soon, viewers will quickly tire of her seemingly random appearances alongside the other characters.

We don’t want to be Bailey haters, but she’s definitely the weak link so far in Season 8.

FAIRHAVEN, MASS. (WHDH) – An investigation is currently underway in Fairhaven following a serious pedestrian accident that occurred on Saturday night.

Officers responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck in the area of Howland Road and Garrison Street around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, they found an adult pedestrian suffering from serious injuries, according to the Fairhaven Police Department.

The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene. Fairhaven Police are conducting the investigation with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, as well as State Police Detectives attached to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Moe Wagner set for Magic return after 13 months after suffering torn ACL

The Magic are set for a major boost as Moe Wagner prepares to make his season debut on Sunday against the Pelicans in Orlando, the team announced Saturday. Wagner has been sidelined since tearing his ACL in a December 21, 2024, win over the Miami Heat.

Moe Wagner is entering his seventh NBA season. He was originally drafted with the No. 25 overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. The Magic will be looking to capitalize on his return as they push forward this season.

Eventually, the tables settled as applause rippled across the room with the announcement of each of the ten film and TV winners along with their clips.

Summoning the most applause was a scene from Oscar frontrunner “One Battle After Another,” featuring a hilarious contretemps between Leonardo DiCaprio and his daughter (Chase Infiniti) before she heads out for prom night. Both were present at the event.

The rousing music-eras scene from “Sinners” also brought down the house, much to the delight of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

These two films will be duking it out with “Frankenstein” for the most nominations on January 22.

American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans

As a diehard Formula 1 fan, I’ve never been into watching NASCAR cars just (mostly) turn left. I know, I know, there’s more to it than that, but when I came across this bonkers feature sports documentary about the team that transformed a NASCAR into a vehicle that could survive the grueling and legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, I was in.

American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans tells the true story of “Garage 56” and their breakneck 18-month mission to build and modify a stock Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to compete with the high-performing and finely engineered machines of the legendary European race.

Spearheaded by NASCAR CEO Jim France and the top-tier Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR team, the 97-minute documentary talks to all the key players and goes behind the scenes to show how they built, tested, and troubleshooted the car to achieve their dream.

Oh, then there’s the drivers. The 24-hour endurance race requires three drivers, and Garage 56 features some of the best to do it — seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, 2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button, and 2010 Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller, who all share their experience in the film.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a motorsports fan or not; American Thunder is a brilliant and exciting underdog story of how the team somehow fit this square peg into a round hole to run their car over 285 laps straight.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net

I saw Cirque du Soleil’s incredible flagship show O in Las Vegas many years ago, and I can honestly say that it is without a doubt the most incredible stage show I have ever seen.

It’s a surreal aquatic spectacle that takes place above, on, and in an enormous 25-foot-deep, 1.5-million-gallon pool in the Bellagio. The show features acrobats, swimmers, high-divers, aerialists, and more, as they fluidly move in and around the set.

Yep, it’s a true spectacle — and it almost went away forever.

Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net tells the true comeback story of the legendary show after it was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting the careers and livelihoods of hundreds of employees at risk.

Sure, the 95-minute documentary is a bit of a promo for the show (who can blame them?), but it offers unprecedented access behind the scenes, with candid and emotional interviews with some of its performers, both in their homes and on set, as they cope with the uncertainty of the show and their futures.

The rehearsal and stage footage alone are worth the watch — I’d always wondered about the incredible feats of engineering involved in the production, as well as the technical precision required for it to be safe and run smoothly.

Without a Net more than delivers, as the crew and team work swiftly towards bringing the show back at the tail end of the pandemic. It truly is a unique look at the blood, sweat, and tears (and lots of water) that go into a world-class production.

Final Thoughts

If you’re on the lookout for something enlightening this weekend, these documentary picks are all easy to watch, offering laughs, some high-speed thrills, and a true spectacle in the making.
