### USDKG Debuts With $50 Million Issuance

Kyrgyzstan’s financial regulator announced on Wednesday the launch of its national stablecoin, USDKG, with an initial issuance valued at over $50 million. Unlike traditional stablecoins, USDKG is pegged to the US dollar but backed by physical gold reserves, making it the world’s first stablecoin of its kind.

Kyrgyzstan’s decision to back its new stablecoin with gold stems from the country’s substantial reserves. The Central Bank currently holds around 340 tons of gold, while exports reached roughly 16 tons in 2024. Geological surveys also suggest over 1,000 tons of confirmed reserves underground.

By backing its stablecoin with gold instead of US Treasuries, Kyrgyzstan gains a strategic advantage. It can use USDKG to maintain cross-border payments and support international trade outside US oversight. Against this backdrop, the United States is likely viewing the development with significant concern.

### Undermining US Plans for Stablecoins

Kyrgyzstan is a close ally of Russia and firmly within the Eastern sphere of influence. Several of Kyrgyzstan’s banks have faced SWIFT-related sanctions from the United States, restricting their access to traditional cross-border payment networks.

As a result, the country is following the path of nations like Russia and China, exploring stablecoins as an alternative means to facilitate cross-border transactions and sustain international trade. Its solution, USDKG, is a very valuable alternative—one that will likely not go unnoticed by the United States.

US President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act this year with a clear objective in mind: to reduce the dollar’s exchange value while reinforcing its role as the world’s main payment system. However, when gold rather than US dollars backs a stablecoin, it effectively undermines Washington’s intent.

The stablecoin uses the dollar’s name for credibility and distribution, but it doesn’t increase demand for dollar-based assets such as Treasury bills. Equally important is the fact that gold cannot be sanctioned or frozen by the United States.

Aside from the existing sanctions the US places on adversarial countries, its other options are limited.

### A New Sanction-Proof Financial System?

One of Washington’s main concerns about USDKG is that other countries might follow Kyrgyzstan’s example. Crypto analyst Ryan Adams noted that larger nations, such as India, China, and Brazil, could soon launch their own gold-backed stablecoins.

Unlike Tether, if sovereign governments issue stablecoins, the US would have reduced leverage. It could directly pressure those governments or direct the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to sanction wallets holding USDKG or similar assets.

However, such measures would only block transactions on centralized exchanges, such as Coinbase. They would have little to no effect on stablecoins used in decentralized or DeFi networks, as well as through peer-to-peer transactions.

Given these circumstances, stablecoins not backed by US Treasuries provide America’s rivals with a practical and effective alternative, simultaneously undermining Washington’s goals for a stablecoin-based economy.

Variety has reached out to representatives for both Sweeney and Black Bear, the production and distribution company behind “Christy,” for comment. Rose’s representatives were also contacted.

Sources familiar with the project told Variety that Black Bear was never attached to “Christy” while Rose was involved. Any involvement Rose had with the film occurred before Black Bear joined the project. Another source revealed that Rose had been considered for the role of Christy’s high school girlfriend in an earlier version of the film.

Directed by David Michôd, Sweeney’s “Christy” co-stars Ben Foster and tells the story of boxer Christy Martin’s rise to fame as well as the abuse she suffered at the hands of her coach-turned-husband.

In its review, Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised Sweeney’s transformative performance and described “Christy” as a “wrenching portrait of abuse, enabling, gaslighting, and just how far domestic violence can go.”

Following the film’s underwhelming box office start, Sweeney took to Instagram to issue a statement. She wrote: “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And ‘Christy’ has been the most impactful project of my life.”

She added, “This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.”

“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” Sweeney concluded.

Louis, Illinois – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is seeking answers following allegations that Edward York, a staffer for Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), misrepresented himself to federal agents as legal counsel for Jose Ismeal Ayuzo Sandoval, a four-time deported illegal alien with a prior DUI conviction.

According to a letter from the DHS, York entered an ICE facility in St. Louis, Illinois, on October 29 by falsifying a Department of Homeland Security form. During this visit, York claimed to be the attorney representing Ayuzo Sandoval and demanded to speak with him.

The letter states, “At approximately 1:29 p.m., an individual identified as Edward York, who according to publicly available information, is employed as a Constituent Outreach Coordinator for your Senate office, entered the field office lobby, and in a discussion with a federal officer, claimed to be Mr. Ayuzo’s attorney. Mr. York demanded to speak with his ‘client.’”

York allegedly used this misrepresentation to gain access to the detainee and seek his release from custody. While at the facility, York successfully met with Ayuzo Sandoval and obtained his signature on a G-28 form. The G-28 form authorizes an attorney to represent a client on immigration matters, allowing the attorney to receive official correspondence and communicate with government agencies on their behalf.

The DHS letter also highlights troubling actions concerning the submission of this form. York reportedly attempted to submit the G-28 without Ayuzo Sandoval’s signature. According to Fox News, “Four days later, a Suarez Law Office in Collinsville, Illinois, filed a G-28 electronically that did not have Mr. Ayuzo’s signature, even though Mr. York, who claimed to work for the law firm, had already obtained a signed form.”

The DHS believes there may have been collaboration between York and the law firm to conceal the misrepresentation. The letter states, “It appears as if Mr. York may have collaborated with the firm to cover his misrepresentation.”

This incident raises serious concerns regarding ethical conduct and legal compliance within Senator Duckworth’s office, especially given the sensitive nature of immigration enforcement.

Torn Light Records reopens after a month of mopping up

Torn Light Records Relocates to Chicago’s Bucktown Neighborhood Amid Setbacks

Torn Light Records moved from Cincinnati to Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood in June 2024 and quickly established itself as one of our city’s premier record stores. However, in early October, broken plumbing in the unit above Torn Light flooded the shop four times within a 48-hour period, forcing owners Alex York and Dan Buckley to temporarily shutter the storefront.

“It was a very scary month,” York says. “Truly horrible, making zero dollars for a month. For a small business, it doesn’t work. We don’t have excess cash.”

Earlier in November, York and Buckley received some funds from their insurance company and have been diligently working to reopen the shop. York hopes to be back in business this weekend.

York estimates that Torn Light lost nearly 5,000 records due to water damage, including 3,000 seven-inch records that made up the shop’s entire online inventory. “The sections that were hit were jazz, modern classical, avant-garde,” he explains. “So kind of our hallmarks for larger sales and things that people traveling will stop in to buy from us.”

Over the past month, York and Buckley have depleted their modest savings to pay staff while waiting on their insurance claim. York says insurance is helping cover the cost of replacing the custom furniture that Buckley built for Torn Light, but even with that payout, restocking remains a challenge for a shop that mostly sells used records, CDs, and cassettes.

“A lot of the inventory we have, it’s not necessarily replaceable,” York says. “Of course, I could find a Cecil Taylor LP again, but if I have it out for $20, I probably found it for $12 somewhere—how the hell am I gonna find that again? We’re just having to do whatever we can.”

Torn Light’s staff have come to terms with the necessity to reopen the shop with a slimmer selection. “Reopening without our jazz section is crazy to me,” York admits, “but I’m just trying to let go of it and say, ‘This is just a small blip in time in a much larger lineage of the store. We will have jazz records again.’”

Avondale Venue the Fallen Log Announces Closure

Last week, word spread through Chicago’s DIY scene that Avondale venue the Fallen Log was closing. On Friday, the business made it official with a public announcement: its last day would be Sunday, November 23.

The Fallen Log shares ownership and a building with vegan pizza spot Kitchen 17, which is also closing. “We decided to close for the same reason many businesses close: Unfortunately, the bottom line just wasn’t there,” says co-owner Joe Mertz.

Mertz and co-owner Jennie Plasterer opened the Fallen Log in March 2023, shortly after moving Kitchen 17 to Avondale from Lakeview. The venue quickly became one of Chicago’s most interesting spots, hosting a range of underground bands that typically perform in DIY spaces. Most shows were all-ages, a rarity among aboveground venues in the city.

Cole Hunt of TV Buddha served as the Fallen Log’s talent buyer for about a year and a half, often bringing in emerging acts from the Hallogallo indie-rock scene. Even after he moved on, that scene maintained strong ties to the venue. For example, in August, Peter Cimbalo (live drummer for Kai Slater’s Sharp Pins project) celebrated his new psych-tinged album as Alga with a full-band set at Fallen Log.

“I hope someone comes in and continues the venue, especially the all-ages portion,” Mertz says. “It’s hard to do, but I have really come to believe that it is important for the community, and I hope that some of that legacy lives on.”

The Fallen Log will host a closing party and farewell show on Tuesday, November 25, though details had not been announced by publication time.

Public Works Launches “Fuck ICE: A Popular American Sentiment” T-Shirt

Skims hits $5 billion valuation after funding round led by Goldman

Kim Kardashian’s Skims brand has raised $225 million in new funding led by Goldman Sachs Alternatives, valuing the shapewear and apparel company at $5 billion—up from roughly $4 billion after its 2023 round. While Brian Daboll faced backlash for the team’s performances over the past few weeks, Giants general manager Joe Schoen has also come under scrutiny. However, Giants president John Mara praised Schoen for assembling a promising core of young players in the wake of the coaching change.

“We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development,” Mara said. “Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect.”
