Vegas and Jack Eichel agree on an 8-year, $108 million contract extension, AP source says

Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights have agreed to terms on an eight-year contract extension worth $108 million, according to a person familiar with the deal. Eichel will count $13.5 million against the salary cap from the time the new contract kicks in for the 2026-27 season through 2034.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the extension had not been announced.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old center is the latest high-profile player to re-up with his current team after Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov inked the richest deal in league history at $136 million over eight years. Connor McDavid opted to stay in Edmonton on a short-term deal without a raise from his current $12.5 million salary, and Kyle Connor re-signed in Winnipeg for the maximum eight years at $12 million annually.

Eichel is coming off setting career highs with 66 assists and 94 points last season, when the Golden Knights finished first in the Pacific Division. He helped them win the Stanley Cup in 2023. His representatives and Vegas’ front office reached the agreement roughly six hours before the start of the season.

Asked before training camp opened if he would shut down negotiations once meaningful games got going, Eichel brushed off the question.

“If a contract happens organically, then it happens,” Eichel said last month in Las Vegas at the NHL/NHLPA preseason player media tour. “You can only control so much, right, and that’s sort of in my mindset. What are the things that I focus on? Preparing for the season, getting my mind and body in the best place to be successful and help our hockey team. That’s more so my focus. I think anything else sort of just takes care of itself when you do your job well.”

Eichel was the second pick in the 2015 draft by Buffalo. He played his first five-plus seasons for the Sabres before a dispute over surgery to repair his neck injury led to a trade to Vegas in 2021.

Since undergoing artificial disk replacement, Eichel has produced above a point-a-game level for the Knights. He was the No. 1 center for the U.S. at the 4 Nations Face-Off and was already named to the Olympic team.

Bombay HC blocks Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra’s international travel amid Rs 60 crores fraud case

**Bombay High Court Blocks Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra’s International Travel Amid Rs 60 Crores Fraud Case**

In a significant development in the ongoing Rs 60 crores fraud case involving Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her husband, businessman Raj Kundra, the Bombay High Court has raised serious questions about their request to travel abroad.

The couple had approached the court seeking permission to travel to Colombo and other destinations for a business trip. However, the court, led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad, expressed scepticism over the nature of the trip.

Their counsel, Niranjan Mundargi, was directed to submit an affidavit detailing the purpose of the trip. This affidavit must include formal communications and evidence supporting the claim that it was indeed for business purposes. The court granted time until October 14 for the submission of these details.

During the proceedings, when Mundargi reiterated that the trip was for business, Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar remarked with a smile, “You can first deposit Rs 60 crores if you wish to travel abroad.” This comment underscores the court’s serious approach to the case and its scrutiny of the couple’s actions.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police is investigating the case, which alleges that Shetty and Kundra diverted investment funds for personal use. In light of the ongoing investigation, the court has not issued any immediate orders regarding the Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against them. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on October 14.

This development adds to the mounting legal challenges faced by the couple, who are under intense scrutiny over their financial dealings. As the investigation progresses, the court’s forthcoming decisions will be crucial in determining the future course of action.

**Related Investigation Involving Businessman Deepak Kothari**

In a related matter, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police is investigating a case involving businessman Deepak Kothari. Kothari has accused Shetty and Kundra of diverting Rs 60 crores of his investment for personal use.

The EOW has found that Kothari’s funds were misused and has filed a case against Shetty, Kundra, and an unidentified associate under sections 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

High Prices Crippling Japan’s Cleaning Sector

Analysts warn that a growing number of companies are now closing down not due to sudden shocks, but because of what some describe as “giving up” bankruptcies—where owners simply see no path forward.

At a pizza restaurant crowded with after-work customers, one customer said, “This is about the cheapest place around.” Yet, behind the counter, the struggle to keep prices low is growing.

“Ideally, we’d like to set prices a little higher,” said Anju Kobayashi, manager of the Napolis Akasaka-Hitotsugi Street branch. Ingredients such as pizza dough, ham, and cheese have all risen in price—dough alone costs 20 yen more per piece than last year. A new notice from suppliers shows that from November, the price of dough will jump by 225 yen and cheese by more than 250 yen.

To keep prices unchanged, the store plans to reduce the number of part-time workers from three to two.

From April to September, Teikoku Databank recorded 488 bankruptcies attributed to inflationary pressures, the highest number since comparable data began. Retailers, including restaurants, accounted for more than 20 percent of all cases.

The price surge has also hit small dry-cleaning businesses particularly hard.

At a family-run laundry factory, owner Fumiaki Kobayashi voiced concern: “I’m extremely anxious. I don’t need huge profits, but I just want stable work.”

The petroleum-based solvents required for dry cleaning have nearly doubled in price over the past five years. Yet passing those costs on to customers remains difficult.

“People are more focused on saving money,” Kobayashi said. “If we raise cleaning fees, customer visits will drop—it’s a vicious cycle.”

Adding to the strain is a broader shift in how people dress. “In the past, almost everyone wore 100 percent cotton dress shirts, but that’s no longer the case,” he said. Remote work and prolonged heat have accelerated Japan’s casualization, reducing demand for suits and shirts that require professional cleaning.

Faced with this triple burden of inflation, frugality, and casual fashion, analysts warn that more dry-cleaning businesses may soon face giving-up bankruptcies.

Industry-wide, total sales have fallen to about half of what they were 20 years ago, Kobayashi said. “Some of my peers tell me, ‘It’ll probably end with my generation.’”

For many small businesses unable to fully pass on rising costs, the endurance test of holding on shows no sign of ending.

Manitobans eager to strike gold on world stage

Already making history earlier this year when she became the first woman to win the Marinelli City Singles bowling tournament, Marissa Naylor-McCall is now bolstering her training routine as she prepares to represent Team Canada at the 2025 International Bowling Federation (IBF) World Championships.

Naylor-McCall is one of two Manitobans representing Canada at the adult level, alongside Mitch Hupe. Both bowlers attended the last world championships in Kuwait in 2023, where every Team Canada bowler brought home a medal. It was a record year for Canada.

“We all brought home a medal which hasn’t happened in many years,” said Naylor-McCall.

This will be Naylor-McCall’s fourth year representing Team Canada as an adult and her second World Championships tournament. She spoke highly of her teammate Hupe, a three-time National Bowler of the Year who returns for his 12th adult year.

“(Hupe) has lived and breathed it his whole life,” she said. “He can basically do it all.”

Hupe bowled at Wichita State in college, one of the most renowned bowling programs in North America, boasting 24 Intercollegiate Team Championships between the men’s and women’s programs. Naylor-McCall noted that Hupe was the anchor for Team Canada during the 2023 IBF World Championships, where the men took home gold in the team event for the first time.

“He’s a phenomenal person but an even better bowler,” she said. “He’s a phenom in the bowling community here in Manitoba.”

Hupe bowls on the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, where Naylor-McCall will be taking her talents beginning next season. Excited for the opportunity, she isn’t letting it distract her from her current goal to win gold in Hong Kong.

“I’m excited for next year, but Hong Kong is definitely the focus for right now,” said Naylor-McCall. “Then we’ll set our eyes on (the PBA tour) next year.”

Team Canada head coach Tyrel Rose, who re-joined the team in late 2023, said the team is eager to fight for their place on the podium.

“There is a bit of a chip on the shoulder,” said Rose. “There’s definitely a bit of a ‘we still want to prove ourselves’ attitude.”

Several countries didn’t participate in the 2023 world championships held in Kuwait for political reasons. Rose added, “I think when you can come in as a world champion and still come in with an underdog mentality, you’re doing something right.”

Rose said he and Naylor-McCall hit the ground running in their professional relationship.

“We kind of hit it off really well as a coach and an athlete,” said Rose. “(Naylor-McCall) is very driven. She works really hard at everything she does, whether it’s her business, bowling, or golf. She’s like a sponge — she just wants all the coaching all of the time.”

He said her leadership is an asset given the women’s team’s lack of experience.

“(Naylor-McCall) brings that kind of professional energy to the team,” said Rose. “To have that leadership — she brings that to the team as if she was a 10-year veteran.”

Rose noted that Hupe, who won a World Masters Gold in 2018, hasn’t lost his touch.

“He’s still grown from there and developed a sense of confidence in himself that he didn’t have five, six, seven years ago,” said Rose. “He really knows what his strengths are and knows how to play to them.”

Rose was an assistant coach for Team Canada from 2009–12, head coached from 2014–18, before taking some time off to spend with his family. He said the connection he shares with his team is invaluable.

“One of the things that’s always driven me is getting to share in this experience with our players,” said Rose. “That kind of emotional connection, the highs and the lows, it’s great.”

Michael Schmidt, executive director of the Manitoba Tenpin Federation, said he expects the two Manitoba veterans to make the province proud in Hong Kong.

“They have experience, they’ve represented Canada numerous times. They know how to get the job done, and I just wish them as much success as possible, to bring home some more gold medals,” said Schmidt.

For Naylor-McCall, bringing home gold in the singles event is high on her priority list. But winning as a team is her biggest wish.

“The ultimate goal always for these events is winning gold in the team event,” she said. “I know on the women’s side we haven’t medalled in the team event for a long time. We just have to trust in the preparation. If we can keep it simple and just do what we do best, I’m sure that getting on the podium will be pretty easy for us.”

The IBF World Championships start in Hong Kong on November 24.
