Heavy, unabating rains in West Bengal have caused significant destruction, claiming the lives of at least 28 people and leaving dozens reported missing. The worst-hit area is Darjeeling, where the town of Mirik alone has witnessed 13 deaths, with many others still missing as rescue operations continue.

The severe downpours across North Bengal have triggered landslides, causing roads to collapse and stranding numerous tourists during the Durga Puja vacation period.

**Wildlife Impact**

A heartbreaking viral video from near Jaldapara National Park shows rhinos floating in floodwaters and even chasing people. Jaldapara is renowned for its population of the one-horned rhinoceros and other endangered species, many of which are severely affected by the floods.

The devastating weather has not spared neighboring Nepal either. According to *The Kathmandu Post*, water-induced disasters there have resulted in 47 deaths and nine people missing.

**Rescue Efforts**

In the midst of the chaos, elephants have emerged as unexpected heroes. Ravikant Jha, Assistant Wildlife Warden of Jaldapara, shared how elephants are aiding rescue efforts by transporting stranded tourists after a wooden bridge near a lodge collapsed. “Our elephants have brought 2-4 tourists across the river because the bridge broke due to rain,” he said.

Additionally, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been actively involved in flood and water rescue operations. They have successfully rescued over 160 people from the affected areas—105 by boat and another 55 either airlifted or pulled across using zip lines in Jalpaiguri. During these operations, one deceased individual was also recovered.

**Weather Forecast**

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted that scattered light to moderate rains will continue in the sub-Himalayan regions until October 12. Isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds reaching 30-40 km/h, and lightning are expected to persist until Tuesday morning.

The ongoing rains and floods continue to wreak havoc on both human lives and wildlife, highlighting the urgent need for sustained rescue efforts and disaster preparedness in the region.

Rishabh Pant set for Ranji Trophy return in late October

**Rishabh Pant Set for Ranji Trophy Return in Late October**

*By Rajdeep Saha | October 6, 2025, 6:59 PM*

Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant is on the verge of making a comeback to competitive cricket through the Ranji Trophy. According to The Times of India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to evaluate his recovery status this week, with a potential clearance expected by October 10. If approved, Pant could be back playing for Delhi starting October 25.

**Assessment and Clearance**

A BCCI source revealed, “As of now, there is a likelihood he could be cleared by October 10. An assessment is due this week. It has been a long recovery for him. The BCCI medical team doesn’t want to take any chances.” Pant’s return will be contingent upon his fitness level and official approval from the BCCI.

**Recovery Progress and Injury Details**

Pant has been sidelined since July due to a fractured foot sustained during the fourth Test against England. Initially, the injury was expected to heal within six weeks; however, complications arose when the metatarsal bone in his right foot broke again under pressure as he attempted to bat the very next day after the injury.

Despite these setbacks, Pant has made significant strides in his recovery over the past 20 days, giving hope for his return to the field soon.

**Impact on Matches and Upcoming Schedule**

Pant has missed the ongoing two-Test series against the West Indies as well as the forthcoming white-ball tour of Australia. Nevertheless, depending on the clearance from the Center of Excellence (CoE) and his preparedness, he could participate in two Ranji Trophy matches before November 5.

This potential return is particularly important as India prepares for a home Test series against South Africa starting November 14.

**Pant’s Performance Against England**

In the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Pant delivered an impressive performance across four Test matches. In seven innings, he amassed 479 runs at an average of 68.42, including two centuries and three half-centuries. Additionally, he showcased his aggressive batting by hitting 17 sixes throughout the series.

Pant’s imminent return is eagerly awaited by fans and selectors alike, as he remains a key player for Indian cricket’s future.

Bihar Assembly elections: Voting in two phases on Nov 6, 11; result on Nov 14

**Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 Schedule Announced by Election Commission**

The Election Commission on Monday announced the schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections 2025. The state’s 243 assembly seats will go to the polls in two phases, on November 6 and 11, with the counting of votes set for November 14, reported ANI.

In the 2015 Assembly elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) secured 80 seats with an 18.8% vote share, while its ally, the Congress, won 27 seats with 6.8%. The Janata Dal (United), then part of the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance), bagged 71 seats with 17.3% vote share. The BJP won 53 seats with the highest vote share at 25%, and other parties took 8 seats with a combined 22.5%.

However, the alliance was short-lived. In 2017, Nitish Kumar exited the Mahagathbandhan and realigned with the BJP-led NDA, forming the government with Sushil Kumar Modi as Deputy Chief Minister.

In 2020, Nitish Kumar retained power under the NDA banner, winning 125 seats. But in August 2022, he once again broke away from the BJP and re-joined the RJD and Congress, forming a new government and becoming a central figure in the opposition INDIA bloc.

In January 2024, ahead of the general elections, Nitish Kumar rejoined the NDA. This time, the NDA includes JD(U), BJP, Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Jitin Manjhi’s Hindustan Awami Morcha, and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP).

In the upcoming elections, the NDA will face off against the INDIA bloc, comprising Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), CPI, CPM, and Mukesh Sahani’s Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP). A new entrant, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, will also make its debut.

The NDA is banking on the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the various welfare schemes rolled out by the Centre and State. Notably, on September 26, the PM launched the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, transferring Rs 10,000 each to 75 lakh women’s bank accounts—a move being seen as a potential game changer, according to ANI.

The PM also unveiled youth-centric projects worth over Rs 62,000 crore, including the inauguration of the Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Skill University in Bihar.

Meanwhile, the BJP continues to highlight the alleged corruption and lawlessness of the Lalu Yadav era as part of its campaign narrative.

The Election Commission has also released the final electoral rolls following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The number of electors now stands at 7.42 crore, down from 7.89 crore in June.

According to the Commission, 65 lakh names were removed from the draft list, while 21.53 lakh new voters were added. Significant additions include 1.63 lakh voters in 14 Patna constituencies, 85,645 in Madhubani, and 56,423 in Nalanda after the revision process.

Bihar Assembly election schedule to be announced today

**Bihar Assembly Election Schedule to Be Announced Today**

*By Chanshimla Varah | Oct 06, 2025, 10:23 AM*

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections today, Monday, during a press conference at 4:00 PM. With the term of the current 243-member Bihar Assembly ending on November 22, elections must be conducted before that date.

**Political Parties Advocate for Post-Chhath Polls**

Several political parties in Bihar are urging that the elections be held after the Chhath festival, which concludes in October. Their rationale is that scheduling polls post-festival would encourage greater voter participation, as many residents working outside the state return home during this time.

The previous Bihar Assembly elections in 2020 were conducted in three phases amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

**New Measures Announced for Voter List Revision**

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has introduced new initiatives to ensure a cleaner and more accurate voter list for the upcoming elections. A special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter rolls was conducted—the first after 22 years, with the last revision taking place in 2003.

These measures will be implemented nationwide and include a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) guaranteeing that Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) are delivered to voters within 15 days of registration. Additionally, a mobile deposit facility will be available at polling booths to streamline the voting process.

**ECI Reviews Election Preparedness with Bihar Visit**

The announcement follows a recent two-day visit by an ECI delegation to Bihar to assess poll readiness. The team was led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and included Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

The upcoming Bihar elections are expected to witness a keen contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Janata Dal United (JDU) alliance and the opposition Mahagathbandhan, headed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress.

Mumbai Weather Update: City Wakes Up To Clear Skies After Overnight Showers; No Rainfall Alert Issued

Mumbai Wakes Up to Bright Sunshine and Pleasant Breeze Following Light Showers

Mumbai experienced bright sunshine and a pleasant breeze on Monday morning after light to moderate showers soaked parts of the suburbs late Sunday night. The first week of October signals a retreat in monsoon activity along the Konkan coast, with rainfall intensity gradually decreasing across the region.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts have largely stabilized following several days of intermittent drizzle and moderate rain. As of October 6, no weather alerts have been issued for any district in the Konkan belt, providing some much-needed respite to residents after weeks of unsettled weather.

Weather Update for Mumbai & MMR

In Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, Monday morning saw mostly stable weather characterized by cloudy but dry conditions. The IMD has ruled out chances of heavy rainfall throughout the day. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 31°C, while minimum temperatures will hover near 25°C. Despite the clear skies, humid conditions are likely to make the day feel warmer and slightly uncomfortable, especially for outdoor commuters.

In Palghar district, the weather is expected to fluctuate between bright sunshine and occasional light drizzle in some pockets, with other areas remaining completely dry. Morning skies remained partly cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 29°C and 31°C. The high humidity is anticipated to cause mild discomfort during the afternoon hours.

Further south along the Konkan coast, in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, calm weather prevailed following several days of light rainfall. The day is expected to remain largely dry with gentle to moderate sea conditions. Temperatures in these districts are likely to stay close to 30°C. Residents along the coastal belt may experience humid and slightly warm conditions, especially during midday hours.

Light Rains Expected From Tomorrow

The IMD has forecasted that light rain may return to some parts of the Konkan and interior Maharashtra starting October 7, marking a brief revival of post-monsoon showers. However, for now, Mumbaikars can expect relatively dry and stable weather over the next 24 hours. Clear skies, moderate humidity, and calm winds will offer a brief but welcome break from the persistent rains experienced throughout September.

Has Mohammed Shami played his last game for Team India?

**Has Mohammed Shami Played His Last Game for Team India?**
*By Gaurav Tripathi | Oct 05, 2025, 10:14 AM*

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts on the future of fast bowler Mohammed Shami following the latter’s exclusion from India’s white-ball squads for the upcoming series against Australia.

### The Injury Struggle and Its Impact

Mohammed Shami, 35, has been battling injuries since the 2023 ODI World Cup. Despite overcoming a year-long fitness struggle, he has been unable to regain his peak form. Gavaskar noted that for a fast bowler like Shami, recovering from such injuries is especially challenging.

“In Mohammed Shami’s case, it’ll be a real uphill climb for him. It’s going to be very, very tough,” Gavaskar told *India Today*. He also acknowledged Shami’s valuable contribution to Indian cricket over the years.

Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year but has since found it hard to secure a spot in the national team.

### Declining Form and Limited Opportunities

The 2025 IPL season was disappointing for Shami as he struggled to make an impact with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Consequently, he was left out of key tours and tournaments, including the England tour, the T20 Asia Cup 2025, and the West Indies Test series.

His domestic performances have also been underwhelming, notably in the Duleep Trophy where he picked up only one wicket in 34 overs while representing East Zone.

### Selectors’ Long-Term Vision

In recent squad announcements, India’s selection committee has made significant changes ahead of the Australia tour. Shami, along with Ravindra Jadeja, has been omitted to make room for younger talents like Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar.

This move signals a clear long-term strategy focusing on building a core team for the 2027 World Cup. Shami’s exclusion appears to be part of this broader vision to develop fresh talent and invest in the future.

### A Look Back at Shami’s Career

Mohammed Shami made his international debut in 2013 and quickly established himself as a vital member of the Indian bowling attack across all formats.

– **ODIs:** 64 matches, 116 wickets at an average of 25.71
– **Tests:** 64 matches, 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, including six five-wicket hauls
– **T20Is:** 27 wickets at an average of 28

Shami’s experience and skill have been invaluable to Team India, but with continuing fitness concerns and emerging young talent, his international future remains uncertain.

As India gears up for future challenges, the story of Mohammed Shami’s international career may be approaching its final chapter. Fans and experts alike await further developments as the team evolves towards the 2027 World Cup.
