3 clear indications from India A’s squad for the red-ball matches against South Africa A ft. Rishabh Pant

On Wednesday, October 22, the BCCI announced India A’s squad for the upcoming red-ball games against South Africa A. These A tour matches will be played ahead of the Proteas’ Test tour of India, with both encounters scheduled at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The series will commence on Thursday, October 30, with Rishabh Pant making a long-awaited return to the field—a major headline for fans and selectors alike.

### India A Squad for the 1st Four-Day Match vs South Africa A:
– Rishabh Pant (c) (wk)
– Ayush Mhatre
– N Jagdeesan (wk)
– Sai Sudharsan (vc)
– Devdutt Padikkal
– Rajat Patidar
– Harsh Dubey
– Tanush Kotian
– Manav Suthar
– Anshul Kamboj
– Yash Thakur
– Ayush Badoni
– Saransh Jain

### India A Squad for the 2nd Four-Day Match vs South Africa A:
– Rishabh Pant (c) (wk)
– KL Rahul
– Dhruv Jurel (wk)
– Sai Sudharsan (vc)
– Devdutt Padikkal
– Ruturaj Gaikwad
– Harsh Dubey
– Tanush Kotian
– Manav Suthar
– Khaleel Ahmed
– Gurnoor Brar
– Abhimanyu Easwaran
– Prasidh Krishna
– Mohammed Siraj
– Akash Deep

The selectors haven’t revealed much about their thought process in selecting the squads, as no press conference was held. However, several interesting signs emerge when analyzing the team composition. Here are three clear indications from India A’s squad for these red-ball matches against South Africa A.

### #3 Sai Sudharsan Appointed Vice-Captain Ahead of Other Names

Names such as Rajat Patidar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Dhruv Jurel have often been in the mix for captaincy roles in A teams and Duleep Trophy squads. Despite this, the selectors have named Sai Sudharsan as Rishabh Pant’s deputy for this series.

One possible reason could be that Patidar, Gaikwad, and Jurel are not playing both contests, which influenced the decision. Nonetheless, having different vice-captains in recent similar series suggests the selectors are exploring new leadership options. Sai Sudharsan is known for his calm demeanor and despite limited top-level leadership experience, appointing him as vice-captain appears to be a positive step forward.

### #2 The Thinness of India’s Red-Ball Contingent Is Evident

Ayush Mhatre has been picked as one of India A’s openers for the first match against South Africa A. While Mhatre is a talented youngster who has played notable innings in the Ranji Trophy, his place in the A team at this stage is debatable. His recent white-ball performances for the U19s have been disappointing; although he has fared better in red-ball cricket, he still needs substantial development. Additionally, Mhatre’s technique, particularly his foot movement, could benefit from more experience at lower levels.

On the bowling front, India A have selected only two pacers for the first match—Yash Thakur and Anshul Kamboj. Neither name inspires immediate confidence, highlighting how thin India’s fast-bowling resources currently are. The struggles in both the opening batting and pace-bowling departments clearly indicate significant room for improvement.

### #1 Rishabh Pant Is Back!

Last seen during India’s fourth Test against England, Rishabh Pant looks set to make an international comeback during the upcoming home Test series against South Africa. Before that, he will lead India A in these two red-ball matches.

Pant was long considered one of India’s frontline options for Test captaincy; however, that mantle has since passed to Shubman Gill. Still, having Pant involved in the leadership setup is a positive for the senior team, especially after the recent departures of influential leaders like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

More importantly, reports of a slow-foot injury recovery appear to be behind Pant. His inclusion in both matches signals that his foot has healed sufficiently, and he has made a convincing comeback.

As the series approaches, all eyes will be on India A’s young talents and returning senior players alike. This set of games not only offers a glimpse of India’s red-ball future but also prepares the squad for the challenging Test series against South Africa.

Karur stampede case: SC orders CBI probe, forms committee

**Karur Stampede Case: Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe, Constitutes Oversight Committee**

*By Snehil Singh | October 13, 2025, 11:34 AM*

The Supreme Court has directed a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic stampede that occurred in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27, 2025. The incident unfolded during a political rally organized by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, had challenged a Madras High Court order which called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe. Vijay also demanded an independent investigation, addressing the adverse remarks made by the High Court regarding the case.

### Supreme Court Constitutes Committee to Oversee CBI Probe

The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjaria, has set up a three-member committee to monitor and supervise the ongoing CBI investigation. The committee will be headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. Alongside him, two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers—likely from Tamil Nadu but not locals—will serve on the panel.

In a bid for transparency, the Supreme Court has instructed the CBI to submit monthly progress reports of its investigation directly to this committee.

### Conflicting High Court Orders Raise Concerns

The Supreme Court’s intervention comes amid conflicting orders from different benches of the Madras High Court. While the principal bench ordered an SIT investigation into the case, the Madurai Bench had earlier refused to allow a CBI probe. This discrepancy had raised concerns at the apex court level.

### Background: Madras High Court’s SIT Order and Legal Developments

On October 3, Justice N Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court directed a Special Investigation Team probe, expressing dissatisfaction with the state’s investigation into the stampede. The judge highlighted that no criminal case had been filed in connection with two separate hit-and-run incidents involving Vijay’s campaign vehicle.

Subsequently, a case was reportedly registered against the driver of Vijay’s campaign vehicle for these incidents. In response, TVK approached the Supreme Court seeking an independent investigation beyond what the state authorities had provided.

### SOP for Rallies Plea Assigned to Division Bench

Alongside the probe order, the Supreme Court has assigned the plea regarding the establishment of a Standard Operating Protocol (SOP) for roadshows and political rallies to a division bench of the Madras High Court.

Senior advocates Gopal Subramaniam and Aryama Sundaram appeared for TVK, while senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and P Wilson represented the Tamil Nadu government in the matter.

The developments surrounding the Karur stampede case highlight intensified judicial scrutiny and the demand for a transparent and impartial investigation into the tragedy that shook Tamil Nadu. This ongoing probe and the formulation of SOPs are expected to set precedents for the management of mass political gatherings in the future.

Women’s WC: Mandhana, Rawal register record-breaking opening stand against Australia

**Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal Set New Record for Highest-Ever Opening Partnership Against Australia in ICC Women’s World Cups**

*By Gaurav Tripathi | Oct 12, 2025, 06:17 PM*

In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal have set a new record for the highest-ever opening partnership against Australia in ICC Women’s World Cups. The remarkable feat was achieved during India’s group stage match against Australia on Sunday in Visakhapatnam.

The duo surpassed the previous record held by England’s E Bakewell and D Thomas, who had put together 101 runs in the inaugural World Cup of 1973. Mandhana and Rawal are now the only pair to have registered a century stand against Australia in Women’s World Cup history.

### Record-Breaking Feat: Highest Opening Stand Against Australia

According to ESPNcricinfo, Mandhana and Rawal also set a new record for the highest-ever opening partnership against Australia in Women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs). Together, they constructed an impressive 155-run stand before Mandhana was dismissed for 80 runs.

Starting their innings cautiously, the duo gradually took control and unleashed some brilliant strokes, particularly against two of Australia’s premier bowlers, Sophie Molineux and Ashleigh Gardner. Their partnership was highlighted by a series of well-timed boundaries that thrilled fans.

### Milestone Achievement: Second ODI Partnership for Mandhana and Rawal

The ninth over of the match was a turning point when Rawal struck a six followed by a four off Gardner, pushing their partnership past the 50-run mark. This marked their 14th 50-plus stand in ODIs, placing them second only to Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj, who have 18 such partnerships for India.

This partnership was also their sixth opening stand across 21 WODI innings, with only Mithali Raj and Punam Raut having more century stands for India in this format (7 each).

### Partnership Progress: Fourth Century-Plus Stand of 2025 for the Duo

At 93 runs in the 18th over, Rawal was given a reprieve after being dropped. The partnership quickly climbed to surpass the 100-run milestone, marking their fourth century-plus stand in 2025 alone. This achievement is second only to Australia’s Belinda Clark and Lisa Keightley, who had five such stands in 2000, and New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest with four in 2015.

### Smriti Mandhana Surpasses 5,000 WODI Runs

Mandhana was eventually dismissed for 80 runs off 66 balls, which included 9 fours and 3 sixes. During this innings, she crossed the significant milestone of 5,000 WODI runs, becoming the fastest woman to do so, achieving it in just 112 innings.

Her career tally now includes 13 centuries and 33 half-centuries. Additionally, with her 18th run in the game, Mandhana became the first-ever batter to complete 1,000 runs in a calendar year in WODIs.

### Pratika Rawal Scores Seventh WODI Fifty

Rawal contributed a solid 75 runs off 96 balls, featuring 10 fours and a six. The 25-year-old now has eight scores of 50 or more across 21 WODI appearances, including one century.

ESPNcricinfo reports that her seventh WODI fifty has taken her overall run tally to 982 runs at an impressive average of 49.10. This was her second fifty against Australia in just four outings and also marked her maiden fifty in the Women’s World Cup.

This landmark partnership by Mandhana and Rawal not only highlights the depth and talent in the Indian women’s cricket team but also sets the stage for an exciting campaign ahead in the World Cup.

In an enthralling group stage match against Australia in Visakhapatnam, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal scripted history by setting a new record for the highest-ever opening partnership against Australia in ICC Women’s World Cups. The dynamic duo surpassed the previous mark of 101 runs held by England’s E Bakewell and D Thomas, which was set during the inaugural World Cup in 1973. Interestingly, no other pair had managed a century stand against Australia in Women’s World Cups until now.

### Record-Breaking Feat: Highest Opening Stand Against Australia

According to ESPNcricinfo, Mandhana and Rawal also rewrote the record books by registering the highest-ever opening partnership against Australia in Women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs). The pair compiled an impressive 155-run stand before Mandhana was dismissed for 80 runs.

The innings began cautiously, with both players taking their time to assess the conditions. However, as the partnership blossomed, they took on Australia’s premier bowlers, Sophie Molineux and Ashleigh Gardner, dispatching them with crisply timed boundaries and well-calculated aggression.

### Milestone Achievement: Second ODI Partnership for Mandhana and Rawal

The partnership gained momentum in the ninth over when Rawal showcased her power-hitting prowess by smashing a six and a four off Ashleigh Gardner, pushing their stand beyond 50 runs. This marked their 14th 50-plus partnership in ODIs, putting them second only to the formidable duo of Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj, who have registered 18 such stands for India.

Furthermore, this stand was their sixth successful opening partnership across 21 Women’s ODI innings. When it comes to century stands for India in the format, only Mithali Raj and Punam Raut have more with seven such partnerships.

### Partnership Progress: Fourth Century-Plus Stand of 2025 for the Duo

At 93 runs in the 18th over, Rawal was dropped on the field but quickly recovered as they crossed the 100-run milestone. This marked their fourth century-plus partnership in 2025 alone, a feat only rivaled by Australia’s Belinda Clark and Lisa Keightley, who achieved five century stands in 2000, and New Zealand’s Suzie Bates and Rachel Priest, who recorded four in 2015.

### Smriti Mandhana’s Personal Milestones

Mandhana’s innings was a fine display of skill and power. She scored 80 runs off just 66 balls, including 9 fours and 3 sixes. During her stay at the crease, she passed the significant milestone of 5,000 runs in Women’s ODIs, taking only 112 innings to reach this mark — the fastest ever to do so. Her career tally now includes 13 centuries and 33 half-centuries.

Additionally, with her 18th run in the match, Mandhana became the first-ever batter in Women’s ODIs to complete 1,000 runs in a calendar year, underscoring her consistent brilliance.

### Pratika Rawal’s Impressive Performance

Rawal contributed a well-made 75 off 96 deliveries, featuring 10 fours and a six. The 25-year-old now boasts eight 50-plus scores in 21 WODI appearances, including one century. According to ESPNcricinfo, her seventh WODI fifty brought her total runs to 982 at an excellent average of 49.10.

This innings marked her second fifty in just four outings against Australia and her maiden half-century in the ICC Women’s World Cup, highlighting her emergence as a dependable middle-order batter for India.

The record-breaking opening stand by Mandhana and Rawal not only set the tone for India’s innings but also added a memorable chapter to the history of Women’s cricket. Their combination of resilience, skill, and aggression promises exciting times ahead for Indian cricket fans.

Durgapur gang-rape: NCW suggests probing survivor’s friend, political controversy erupts

Durgapur Gang-Rape: NCW Suggests Probing Survivor’s Friend, Political Controversy Erupts

By Snehil Singh | Oct 12, 2025 | 02:05 PM

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has recommended that police interrogate a friend of the 23-year-old Odisha college student who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal. NCW member Archana Majumdar met the survivor at a hospital, where the victim revealed that her friend had persuaded her to leave her private college shortly before the attack on Friday.

Investigation Progress: Friend Also Under Scanner

So far, three suspects have been arrested and one detained in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Apu Bauri (21), Firdos Sekh (23), Sekh Reajuddin (31), and Sheikh Sofiqul.

The survivor’s father also indicated possible involvement of the friend, stating that the friend fled when the accused cornered his daughter. “The survivor’s friend is also under the scanner. He had insisted that she go out with him. When the survivor was cornered by the accused, he fled the scene,” said NCW member Archana Majumdar.

Allegations: Friend Left Her Alone, Say Police

The survivor’s mother alleged that her daughter was gang-raped around 10:00 PM last Friday. According to police, an initial probe revealed that the survivor went out with her friend around 8:00 to 8:30 PM.

“The friend left her alone when three unidentified men arrived there,” a police officer speaking on the condition of anonymity said. The accused reportedly snatched the woman’s phone and took her to a jungle outside the campus, where they raped her, threatening serious consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

Political Response: Calls for Immediate Arrests

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has assured the survivor’s family of the state government’s support amid the investigation. Meanwhile, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha and West Bengal have demanded the swift arrest of all those involved in the case.

Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, accused the Mamata Banerjee administration—who is also the state’s police minister—of law and order collapse.

Minister’s Statement: Investigation Following All Protocols

West Bengal Women and Child Development Minister Sashi Panja described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and emphasized that politicizing crimes against women is undesirable.

East Asansol Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Gupta confirmed on Sunday that all investigation protocols are being followed. A drone has been deployed to track a fifth accused believed to be involved in the case.

Mumbai: Bombay HC Commutes Death Penalty To Life In Prison For Man Who Killed 2 In 2017 Bandra Arson Attack

**Bombay High Court Commutes Death Sentence to Life Imprisonment in 2017 Double Murder Case**

The Bombay High Court on Thursday commuted the death sentence of a man convicted of killing a woman and her tenant’s two-year-old daughter in 2017. The incident occurred after the victim reportedly called the accused derogatory names such as “hijra” or “chakka.”

The accused, Deepak Jath, had poured petrol on the woman, Amravati, and set her on fire. Tragically, Angel, the two-year-old daughter of Amravati’s tenant, who was sitting beside her at the time, also caught fire. Both victims succumbed to their injuries after being hospitalized for two weeks.

While the court upheld Jath’s conviction for the murders of Amravati and Angel, it reduced his death sentence to life imprisonment. The bench, consisting of Justices Revati Mohite-Dere and Shyam Chandak, noted that the offence did not meet the “rarest of rare” criteria necessary to warrant the death penalty.

> “We do not find that this case, in any way, falls in the category of ‘rarest of rare case’ warranting death sentence to the accused. Hence, the death sentence awarded to the accused for causing the death of Amravati and Angel requires to be commuted,” the bench stated.

The High Court’s order came while hearing a plea filed by the State government seeking confirmation of Jath’s death sentence. It is important to note that a death sentence can only be executed after confirmation by the High Court.

**Background of the Case**

In 2023, a sessions court convicted Deepak Jath and sentenced him to death, deeming the crime to be among the rarest of rare. The prosecution presented facts stating that on April 14, 2017, Amravati and her daughter Rohini, who sold bracelets, were sitting outside their home in Bandra when Jath approached and doused them with petrol.

Rohini escaped by running inside and raising an alarm. Some of the petrol splashed onto Kanta, Amravati’s tenant, and her daughter Angel, who were also nearby. All victims were rushed to the hospital, where Amravati and Angel later died from burn injuries. Kanta suffered 60% burn injuries but survived.

**Defendant’s Statement and Legal Proceedings**

During his statement to the magistrate, Jath explained that he committed the act because Amravati and others repeatedly teased him by calling him “hijra” or “chakka.” He claimed that, in an attempt to prove he was not one of these, he had even exposed himself to them.

Jath’s lawyer, Farhana Shah, argued for leniency on the grounds of mental instability. She presented medical documents showing that Jath was declared unfit to stand trial on October 23, 2021, and that the trial began only after he was declared fit on June 10, 2022.

Despite these claims, the court observed that Jath himself admitted to committing the offense and justified it on the basis of the teasing he endured. Consequently, while the court maintained his conviction, it opted for life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.

*This case highlights the judiciary’s careful consideration in differentiating between crimes that warrant the death penalty and those that do not, emphasizing the principle of “rarest of rare” to decide capital punishment.*

Bihar Election 2025: Jitan Ram Manjhi & Chirag Paswan Toughen Stand On Seat-Sharing Ahead Of Assembly Polls

**Patna:** Bihar’s two prominent Dalit leaders and Union ministers, Jitan Ram Manjhi and Chirag Paswan, are posing a significant challenge to the BJP by hardening their stance on seat-sharing deals for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

Manjhi, leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), has asserted that his party will not contest the polls unless it is allotted at least 15 seats in the alliance. Speaking to reporters, he clarified that HAM would remain part of the NDA camp but emphasized the need for adequate recognition through a respectable number of seats.

“I don’t want to become chief minister. I just want our party to be recognized,” Manjhi said. “In the absence of recognition, we face humiliation. If we do not get the proposed number of seats, we will not contest the election. We will support the NDA, but we won’t contest.”

BJP national president JP Nadda reportedly contacted Manjhi to pacify him and discuss the seat-sharing issue.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Manjhi quoted lines from Dinkar’s classic war poem *Rashmirathi*, with a slight modification. The poem narrates Lord Krishna’s desperate attempt to prevent the Mahabharata battle. Manjhi’s version reads:

*“Ho nyay agar to aadha do, yadi us mein bhi koi badha ho, to de do keval 15 gram, rakho apni dharti tamam, HAM wahi khushi se khayenge, parijan pe asi na uthayenge.”*

This loosely translates to: “Give us just 15 villages and keep everything else. HAM will be happy and won’t raise arms against our own.” In the original poem, Dinkar wrote ‘5 gram’—five villages for the five Pandava brothers—but Manjhi replaced this with 15 to underline his demand.

On the other hand, Chirag Paswan, leader of the undivided Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), is more reserved but still sends clear signals about his intentions. Though he has refrained from openly applying pressure, he dropped a cryptic message on the death anniversary of his late father, Ram Vilas Paswan, the founder of LJP.

Recalling his father, Chirag said, “Papa always used to say, do not commit a crime, do not endure a crime. If you want to live, learn to die, learn to fight at every step.”

Reports suggest that the LJP is demanding 40 seats in the NDA’s seat-sharing arrangement. However, the BJP reportedly wants to allocate only eight seats to HAM and 22 seats to Chirag’s faction, highlighting the ongoing tussle ahead of the elections.

The seat-sharing negotiations within the NDA are still in the early stages, with further information expected to be shared at the appropriate time. Meanwhile, both Manjhi and Chirag remain key players whose decisions could significantly impact the alliance’s prospects in Bihar.
