Google is rolling out a new feature in its Chrome browser that automatically mutes notifications from websites users frequently ignore. This move aims to combat “notification fatigue” by reducing the number of unnecessary pop-up alerts.
The update applies to both Android and desktop versions of Chrome and expands on the capabilities of Chrome’s existing Safety Check tool, which helps users manage sensitive permissions such as camera and location access.
### How the New Feature Works
The enhancement extends the Safety Check tool to cover website notifications. It automatically revokes notification permissions from sites that send excessive alerts but receive little to no user interaction. This functionality is similar to an existing Android feature that allows users to unsubscribe from notifications with a single tap.
However, it’s important to note that this new feature does not affect web apps installed on the device; it specifically targets websites with high notification volumes and low engagement rates.
### Tackling Notification Overload
Google highlights that fewer than 1% of all web notifications in Chrome receive any form of user interaction, meaning the vast majority of alerts go ignored. During testing, the company observed a significant decrease in notification overload, while the overall number of notification clicks remained largely unchanged. Interestingly, websites that send fewer notifications are seeing an increase in user engagement.
### User Control and Customization
Users retain full control over this feature. Chrome users can disable the automatic revocation of notification permissions at any time. Additionally, they can restore notifications from specific websites by revisiting those sites or by adjusting permissions through the Safety Check menu in Chrome.
### Availability
While Google has not announced an exact release date, this feature is expected to be included in an upcoming Chrome browser update available to all users.
