Dave Hyde: A day for Diana Nyad, and a reunion of ‘two Fort Lauderdale girls’

**Diana Nyad Honored with Plaque at Fort Lauderdale Beach**

FORT LAUDERDALE — It was Diana Nyad’s day, her moment, and her stage as a plaque was unveiled honoring her life achievements at the very Fort Lauderdale beach where she played as a child.

Pointing up East Las Olas Boulevard to a bridge she’d walk over each day from her home on Desota Drive, Nyad, now 76, said, “This plaque is right where I’d come with my family from the time I was in second grade through high school.”

There was another girl who grew up just a few miles away — someone she met in Fort Lauderdale during the 1960s. They’d read about each other in the paper and often found themselves the only two girls at athletic awards banquets, so they would sit together.

“Chris, come in here for a picture,” Nyad called to Chris Evert, the tennis legend, as a photographer waited. The two friends have known each other for six decades, and now they smiled under the plaque that read, “Marathon Swimmer Diana Nyad.”

Nyad’s success is etched in history, from being the first to swim Lake Ontario north to south at age 24, to becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Key West without a shark cage at age 64.

“I’m in absolute awe of her,” said Evert.

When told people say the same about her 18 Grand Slams, Evert responded, “I didn’t nearly die in those like she nearly did.”

Nyad nearly died after being stung by the highly venomous box jellyfish on one of her failed attempts to swim from Cuba. She failed three more times before finally succeeding. Those failures are all part of her achievement — the full journey that actresses Annette Bening and Jodie Foster brought to life in the 2023 movie, *Nyad*.

No one else who failed in attempting to cross the Florida Straits ever tried again — except Nyad.

It was that indomitable spirit that filled the ceremony with a few hundred family members, friends, politicians, and members of Nyad’s support team, who wore uniform T-shirts emblazoned with their motto: “Find A Way.”

Nyad continuously found her own way — from coming out as gay at 21 to swimming around Manhattan in a record seven hours and 58 minutes at age 26, a record for both men and women. She never felt hemmed in by what people thought — or later, by her age.

Swimming the 103 miles from Cuba to Key West in 52 hours, 54 minutes, and 11 seconds was impressive enough. But doing it at age 64? That was extraordinary.

“I faced challenges, but my challenges were within the line of the tennis court,” Evert said during a speech about Nyad. “You took on the ocean. The jellyfish. The sharks. The waves. The unpredictability of it all. And you did it with the belief that the human spirit can’t be held down at 64.”

Once role models for young Broward girls on how to excel as athletes, Nyad and Evert have gone on to be role models for how to age with courageous dignity — Nyad with that monumental swim, and Evert with her public battle against cancer in recent years.

Their story also highlights a broader issue. When Lynette Long conducted a study of Florida plaques in 2017, she found that just six of 950 honored women. Long has since pushed for ceremonies like Thursday’s honoring Nyad. Another ceremony is in the works for Evert.

“Two Fort Lauderdale girls,” said Evert, 70, at one point during the event.

Nyad attended Pine Crest School, while Evert went to St. Thomas Aquinas. Although Nyad was five years older, they forged a friendship in the way the best in any field do — occasionally crossing paths and supporting each other’s successes over the years.

Nyad visited Wimbledon twice and saw Evert there, even interviewing her for television after her final match in 1989. She also fondly remembers bumping into Evert at a Fort Lauderdale store years ago.

“Chris, Wimbledon!” Nyad exclaimed. “I saw your picture in the paper!”

Nyad punctuates the story by saying her picture was small compared to Evert’s larger headlines.

Evert laughs and admits she doesn’t remember the moment. But here they are, all these years later — two Fort Lauderdale girls standing under a plaque of achievement, getting their picture taken together.

“I love you,” Nyad said. “I’m so glad you came.”

“I wouldn’t have missed it,” Evert replied.

“Of course, you must be on Steam. But Steam isn’t the entire world”: CEO of game distribution company says yes, some PC gamers prefer “local” stores to Valve’s mega-shop, and China is a huge factor

Steam is massive, and the vast majority of digital PC games live and die by their success on Valve’s platform. But other platforms, particularly those serving regions where Steam’s reach is limited, can be huge factors in a game’s global success.

That’s the argument presented by Vadim Andreev, CEO of Rokky, a company specialized in helping game publishers reach PC gamers outside of Valve’s ecosystem.

“Steam is the centre for everyone, yes,” Andreev says in an interview for the latest issue of the Knowledge newsletter. “Of course, you must be on Steam. But Steam isn’t the entire world. There are very big markets — China, Eastern Europe, Latin America — where local platforms are simply stronger in trust, in loyalty, in payment behaviour.”

Andreev has a vested interest in encouraging publishers to see the digital distribution world beyond Steam. Rokky works with those publishers to help them reach non-Steam platforms, distributing keys, aiding with marketing, and offering sales analysis.

The company also happens to own at least one such alternative storefront: ChinaPlay, which was acquired in 2025.

“The whole PC market is growing about two per cent; the Chinese PC market is growing about 15 per cent,” Andreev explains. “We wanted people who understand this market better than we do.”

Across the fast-growing gaming markets in the regions Rokky particularly serves, players “visit local stores because of loyalty programmes, local payment, their own social network,” Andreev says. “They know them better. Steam is not unavailable — it’s just not their first choice.”

You might recall that Rokky recently published a study suggesting that 72% of game developers “see Steam as a monopoly,” an assertion that provoked some serious discourse about what constitutes a monopoly and whether Valve’s platform meets that definition.

Clearly, the folks at Rokky believe there are many parts of the world where Steam can be challenged.

“Steam is great, but it is not enough if you want full global revenue,” Andreev concludes.

Cooper Flagg Gets Unfavorable Comparison from Golden State Warriors’ Legend

When the Dallas Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft lottery and landed Cooper Flagg with the top pick, expectations were sky-high. Alongside established stars like Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and eventually Kyrie Irving, Flagg was projected to slowly blossom into a bona fide superstar. However, the reality has been quite different.

Instead of thriving, Flagg finds himself playing the wrong position, without a reliable supporting cast, and on a struggling team. The Mavericks have only started a true point guard, D’Angelo Russell, once this season—and that game resulted in an embarrassing loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Currently, Dallas sits in last place in the Western Conference, and things aren’t looking promising for the young star.

### Cooper Flagg Compared to Ben Simmons

Both Flagg and Ben Simmons share physical similarities: they look like jumbo wings who can handle the ball and are highly regarded for their defensive skills. That said, Flagg lacks the natural court vision Simmons possesses but has displayed no reluctance to score the basketball. Simmons’ offensive insecurities ultimately hampered his NBA career, and some experts fear Flagg might face similar challenges.

On his November 6th podcast, Draymond Green raised an important question:

> “If Ben Simmons were allowed to be a power forward that can handle the ball the way he handled the ball, does his career turn out differently than making him a point guard?”

Green continued:

> “So what I would just say about Cooper Flagg is you got to be careful with playing him at point guard. I understand the thinking behind it. But the last thing you want is him to lose his confidence trying to play point guard, because once you lose your confidence in this league, it’s nearly impossible to get it back.”

Unlike Simmons, Flagg thrives off the ball and can serve as a spot-up shooting threat when needed. While the two may look alike physically, once a game is underway, it’s clear that Flagg is a more complete and versatile player. Unfortunately, the Mavericks haven’t been putting him in the best position to succeed.

### Cooper Flagg Is Coming Up Short With the Mavericks

Is it Flagg’s fault that the Mavericks are struggling? Absolutely not. He isn’t responsible for play-calling or lineup decisions, nor is he the one dealing with injuries plaguing the team. However, it must be acknowledged that Flagg has not lived up to the enormous hype.

Though he has shown flashes of brilliance and still has immense potential, Flagg is far from the best rookie in his class by any measurement. Touted as a generational prospect and a surefire future star, he has already been surpassed by rookies who are just as young, raw, and inexperienced.

The coming months will be crucial for Cooper Flagg’s development and his ability to overcome these early career hurdles. For now, the Mavericks—and Flagg himself—face an uphill battle to turn things around.

Biss sued by group over ICE records

A conservative activist group is suing Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss in his capacity as mayor over what the group alleges is a violation of the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) related to Biss’ participation in protests against immigration agents.

The Washington D.C.-based Judicial Watch, which is also suing the city over its reparations program, said it submitted FOIA requests in late September for public records concerning Biss’ “activities related to ICE operations and protest.”

The records requested by Judicial Watch include documents or emails “created by Mayor Daniel Biss regarding efforts to disrupt, monitor, or oppose ICE operations,” records of his participation in protests in Broadview, and his public calendar. The group also sought media related to the protests, including photos or recordings held by the City of Evanston or Biss on “city-issued devices.”

The lawsuit also includes requests for records related to Biss’ “decision to deactivate Evanston’s license plate cameras.” However, this decision was not made by Biss himself but by Evanston Police Chief Schenita Stewart and eventually the City Council.

Judicial Watch alleges that the city denied its FOIA request for these documents, stating the request was “unduly burdensome” and could not be complied with within the required time frame. Under Illinois FOIA law, requests are managed not by the mayor but by the city clerk, Stephanie Mendoza.

“[T]he mayor of Evanston’s apparent interference with lawful immigration operations undermines the rule of law and places law enforcement and other innocent lives at risk,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

It is important to note that Biss is not a designated FOIA Officer and does not have oversight over FOIA requests.

The case was filed late last week in the chancery division of Cook County Circuit Court. When reached for comment on Thursday, the city declined, citing its general policy against commenting on pending litigation.

On Thursday afternoon, Mayor Biss addressed the Judicial Watch lawsuit in a fundraising email for his congressional campaign. He said he was being sued “for defending Evanston against ICE’s attacks on our community,” adding, “nothing will stop me from fighting for Evanston.”

In a related matter, on Wednesday, Judicial Watch sued Illinois Governor JB Pritzker for records related to the state’s “role in providing refuge to Texas Democrat legislators, who fled their state in an attempt to deny quorum and block a redistricting vote.”

Megyn Kelly: Americans ‘loathe’ Meghan Markle. Oprah hypes her $42 jams

If anyone doubts that Meghan Markle has become one of the most polarizing figures in American pop culture, look no further than the dueling viewpoints presented of her this week by two of the country’s most powerful media personalities, Oprah Winfrey and Megyn Kelly.

There is Winfrey, who gave a shout out to Meghan, her Montecito neighbor and blockbuster 2021 interview subject, in her annual “Oprah’s Favorite Things” holiday gift guide, the Daily Mail reported. In the guide, Winfrey hyped some products Meghan sells under her As Ever home products brand, recommending that her fans shell out $42 for a three-jar gift set of berry spreads and orange marmalade.

“Before my neighbor Meghan started her business, she shared her homemade recipes with us,” Winfrey wrote in her guide, which As Ever shared in an email blast to customers, the Daily Mail said. The media mogul and talk-show host continued: “I love to drizzle [one of the spreads] on an English muffin (at left) or yogurt or ice cream. I also love bringing a jam or preserves as a hostess gift, and with this pretty box set of orange marmalade and raspberry and strawberry spreads, just add a bow and you’re ready to go.”

Perhaps, as Winfrey said, the wife of Prince Harry tried out recipes for her fruit spreads in her own Montecito kitchen, and then shared samples with her celebrity friends. But the Daily Mail revealed this past summer that the fruit spreads and marmalade, now sold under the As Ever label, are produced in a factory in Illinois, some 2,000 miles away from Montecito.

The Mail on Sunday also reported that the California fruit for the spreads and marmalade is not locally sourced in a fashionable, high-end foodie way. Instead, the fruit comes from an unknown supplier.

It’s likely that Kelly would have something to say about Winfrey plugging the $42 gift set for Meghan, who has become a chief antagonist of the British royal family. That’s because the conservative commentator, through her YouTube channel and growing media empire, has become one of Meghan’s most outspoken critics.

This week, Kelly offered a scathing takedown of Meghan in an interview with the Daily Mail as she launches her SiriusXM channel. Kelly zeroed in on Meghan’s insistence on being referred to as the Duchess of Sussex, even though she spent fewer than two years as a working member of the British royal family.

After she and Harry fled the U.K. in 2020 to seek their fortune in the United States, the biracial former “Suits” actor used her 2021 interview with Winfrey to suggest that members of the royal family said racist things about the color of her son Archie’s skin.

“[Meghan] is dining out over here on the British Royal titles, it’s so absurd, the family she called racist, the people she called racist,” Kelly said.

Kelly then asserted that many Americans “loathe” Meghan, including liberals who might tend to sympathize with the Los Angeles native who has been known to support progressive political views.

“I’ll tell you something that happens to me,” Kelly said. “I’ll go out to dinner at a restaurant, I’ll have leftists come up to me and say, ‘I disagree with you on literally everything except Meghan Markle and I will download your show and watch your social media for that alone,’ which just shows me she’s one of the few things that has brought us all together in our loathing for this person.”

Kelly also is among a growing chorus of commentators and royal observers who predict that Prince William will strip Harry and Meghan of their royal titles once he becomes king, in the same way his father, King Charles, just took away the royal titles of his younger brother, the former Prince Andrew, due to recent revelations about his ongoing friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew also gave up his title as the Duke of York amid the Epstein scandal and is now known as plain Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

Kelly told the Daily Mail: “King William, in whatever years it takes after he ascends, I think he’s going to take away Harry and Meghan’s royal titles, and that should happen ASAP.”

Meghan is set to return to acting, at least for one movie, “Close Personal Friends.” In the Amazon MGM Studios production, she will also play herself, Page Six reported.

It will be interesting to see how she is credited in the film, given that she also has been accused of using her royal titles to promote her commercial endeavors—something the late Queen Elizabeth II expressly opposed, the Daily Beast reported in April.

When Meghan and Harry stepped away from royal life, they promised the queen they would stop using their HRH titles—royal honorifics that stand for Her Royal Highness and His Royal Highness, respectively.

However, in April, cosmetic entrepreneur Jamie Karin Lima gave a shout-out to Meghan on her podcast and publicly revealed that she had received a gift basket from Meghan, which was signed, “With the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.”

Back in April, the Daily Beast’s royal correspondent Tom Sykes predicted that William wouldn’t put up with Meghan trying to capitalize on her royal titles when she no longer has anything to do with royal life and is not likely to want to spend time in the U.K.

“Charles might be happy to put up with this, but William won’t,” a former courtier told Sykes. “He loathes and despises Harry and Meghan with every bone in his body. He believes they have betrayed everything the family stands for and the idea that they are using their royal status as a calling card will enrage him.”

Kelly echoed those views in her interview with the Daily Mail. If the couple don’t want to live in the UK, she said, “Why would [Meghan] want to be their princess? Why does she get any joy out of being the Duchess of Sussex for such a people?”

“So these two are all about themselves,” Kelly said. “They definitely have lost support here in the United States. No one cares about them, and no one is rooting for them. You saw them get booed at the World Series game the other day. That’s real.”
