Huskers Four Gapping Holes Exposed in Lopsided Loss to Utah, Part 2

Nebraska was bullied and beaten soundly by Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. Along with losing in the trenches and having mediocre quarterback play, there were two other season-long weaknesses that were once again exposed by the Utes.

**Tackling**

In past seasons, it was special teams play that crippled the Huskers. This year, however, poor tackling was a major issue. Part of the problem stemmed from size—Nebraska was too small and too inexperienced up front. While the Blackshirts performed well in pass defense for most of the season, there were a significant number of yards after the catch, especially late in the year.

Basic football fundamentals, such as wrapping up and taking down ball carriers, were lacking. The combination of size issues and a lack of aggressiveness resulted in a team total of just 22 sacks, with team leader Javin Wright recording only three.

New defensive coordinator Aurich comes over from San Diego State, a defense that posted 32 sacks and picked off 15 passes. The Aztecs finished 14th in the nation in total defense. Aurich and head coach Rhule plan to put a strong emphasis on tackling across the board as soon as the teaching phase begins.

**Takeaways**

Nebraska finished the season with a plus-2 turnover margin. They had 13 takeaways in 12 games but gave the ball back 11 times, including once in the bowl game. After five games, they were a plus-6, but their momentum slowed following a minus-3 performance in a win at Maryland.

While a plus-2 turnover margin isn’t terrible, it’s far from impressive. To end the season, Nebraska failed to register a takeaway in the final four games. Their last takeaway was an interception against USC.

By comparison, San Diego State’s defense, led by now Husker DC Aurich, forced 18 takeaways. Pushing Nebraska’s takeaway total into the 20s would signal a marked improvement in defensive play across the board.

**Looking Ahead**

With a small but highly regarded recruiting class coming in, there are areas where the Transfer Portal doesn’t need to be heavily relied upon—such as running back, where promising youngsters Mekhi Nelson, Kwinton Ives, and Isaiah Mozee showed plenty of talent.

However, in the areas where games are most often won or lost—in the trenches and under center—Rhule and his staff have plenty of work to do, both during and after the Transfer Portal closes.

Team Rubicon volunteers help homeowners with heavy storm cleanup in San Bernardino County

**Volunteers Step Up After Christmas Eve Flood in Piñon Hills**

PIÑON HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — In the wake of the devastating Christmas Eve storm that swept through the San Bernardino mountains, volunteers are stepping in to support homeowners facing overwhelming damage. Their tireless efforts are providing hope to residents who otherwise had no idea how they would recover.

Over the weekend, a group of volunteers arrived at Mike Dodgin’s Piñon Hills home, which had been severely damaged when a flood surged through the property. “All of Sheep Creek from Wrightwood came through this property,” Dodgin recalled. Aside from a single mattress, the flood claimed everything else in his home.

However, all is not lost. Team Rubicon—a veteran-led disaster response organization—is now leading the cleanup effort at Dodgin’s home. Volunteers are working tirelessly to remove load after load of mud before taking on the more difficult task of tearing out water-soaked walls.

“We have a group of volunteers that will come out to assist communities in these situations,” said Will Chiaffino of Team Rubicon. “These disasters can be pretty overwhelming.”

For Dodgin, age 78, the assistance is more than just debris removal—it’s a lifeline. “I’d be swamped. There’s no way I could do this, no way at all. If they hadn’t showed up, come by and offered their help. I’d be—I’d be down,” Dodgin said, visibly emotional.

Dodgin’s niece, Janis Miller, told Eyewitness News that without flood insurance, her uncle was prepared to walk away from his home had it not been for the volunteers and Team Rubicon. “They showed up today and they’re a total blessing. We couldn’t do it. We couldn’t do it all,” Miller shared.

Amid the devastation, there is now hope and progress. Twenty veteran-led volunteers are working shoulder to shoulder with Dodgin, transforming heartbreak into hope—one bucket at a time. “I am so lucky to have so many nice people help,” Dodgin said.

Team Rubicon has named its operations in response to this storm “Right Side Up.” The team is also collaborating with San Bernardino County to map out disaster-affected areas. They plan to be in the community until January 5 and have already received requests from several homeowners seeking help to dig out their own homes.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, or if you would like to volunteer, reach out to Team Rubicon to join the effort in rebuilding Piñon Hills, one home at a time.

Depth carries Aztecs to Mountain West win over Air Force

The San Diego State women’s basketball team is far from a one-person show.

“Depth is our strength,” said Aztecs coach Stacie Terry-Hutson. “We have a number of players who can do different things in different situations at different times. We’re a challenging team to play because we have a lot of weapons.”

That was on display New Year’s Eve afternoon at Viejas Arena in a 62-51 Mountain West victory over the defensive-minded Air Force Academy.

Leading scorer Naomi Panganiban got off only one shot in a scoreless first half. Second-leading scorer Nat Martinez was held to four points in each half. But despite limited contributions from their two leading offensive threats, the Aztecs led by as many as 18 points while improving to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Stepping up on Wednesday were guards Kaelyn Hamilton and Nala Williams, along with forwards Bailey Barnhard and Maria Konstantinidou.

Yes, Panganiban and Martinez had their moments. Panganiban drained her first 3-point attempt of the second half and finished with eight points. Martinez was fouled while making a 3-pointer with 4:54 to play in the third quarter and completed the four-point play to boost the Aztecs’ lead to 40-30. She also finished with eight points.

Williams led the Aztecs with 12 points, three assists, a steal, and a block. Hamilton contributed 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor, plus two assists, two steals, and four rebounds.

Terry-Hutson is tabbing Hamilton as a candidate for Mountain West Sixth Player of the Year honors, and the sophomore guard played up to that billing Wednesday. During a 14-second span in the third quarter, Hamilton scored a layup, stole the inbounds pass, and scored another layup to make it 49-32.

“Kaelyn played fantastic today,” said Terry-Hutson. “We want to play an up-tempo brand and get out and run. Defense, defense, defense. Kaelyn was that today. I believe in our bench. I believe our depth is our superpower, just like it was last year.”

Barnhard and Konstantinidou combined to produce 12 points and seven rebounds.

“We pulled out the win with defense and rebounding,” said Terry-Hutson. “We’re glad for the win. Air Force plays an aggressive, challenging style of basketball, especially on defense. We probably played 30 minutes of pretty good basketball. We turned the ball over a little too much. And I thought we let down the last five minutes. We’re still chasing that 40-minute game.”

San Diego State had gone 11 days between games, a break that the coach believes factored into the Aztecs’ play.

“We were a little out of sync at times,” she said. “I like where we are. We’re in a good place. We’re prepared. We’re still young, led by four sophomores.”

This is the first time in Aztec history that San Diego State is playing without a returning upperclassman from the previous season’s team.

Wednesday’s win marked the Aztecs’ fifth straight victory this season and their 11th straight against Mountain West rivals dating back to last season.

Going into the Air Force game, the Aztecs had climbed 70 spots in the NET analytical rankings to No. 84 in the nation over a span of three games.
