Punjab Police bust interstate cybercrime racket, 38 arrested

Punjab Police has busted an interstate cyber fraud racket and arrested 38 people from a resort during a raid, officials said on Friday. The raid was conducted jointly by teams from the Kapurthala Cyber Cell and the city police station in Phagwara on Thursday night.

The arrested accused, including some women, were taken to Kapurthala in a bus. The group comprises individuals from various states, including Punjab, New Delhi, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Haryana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra, according to police.

Police sources revealed that the group was defrauding people in the United States and Canada by offering fake software solutions. They reportedly hacked electronic devices of unsuspecting victims as part of their scheme. One of the accused, who allegedly operated the racket, had leased the resort premises and hired several people to manage an illegal call centre.

An FIR registered in the early hours of Friday stated that the arrests were made under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of cheating, as well as under the Information Technology Act.

During the raid, police recovered 40 laptops, 67 mobile phones, and Rs 10 lakh in cash.

Based on a complaint filed by the MLA’s workers, the police have invoked Sections 296 (obscene acts and songs) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to register the case. Subsequently, a notice has been issued to Pandey.

**Police Constable Shot and Robbed by Four Men in Gwalior**

Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): In a shocking incident on Thursday night, a police constable was shot and robbed by four bike-borne men in Gwalior. The assailants snatched his mobile phone and ₹30,000 in cash before fleeing the scene.

The constable, Pramod Tyagi, who is posted at Rajendra Nagar police station in Indore, was on his way to Joura village in Morena district to visit his sick father when the attack occurred. Around 10:30 pm, near a petrol pump in the Paniyara police station area, the four accused stopped him and forcefully took his belongings.

When Tyagi tried to resist, the robbers fired at him, causing pellet injuries to his hand. After the assault, the attackers fled, leaving the injured constable stranded on the road. Struggling for help, Tyagi signaled to passing vehicles for assistance.

Fortunately, Neetu Sikarwar, former Congress MLA from Sumawali, who was returning from a program, noticed the injured constable and immediately stopped her car. She promptly informed the police and rushed Tyagi to the hospital.

Doctors at the trauma center administered first aid and later referred him to Jaya Rogya Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable and out of danger.

Court records show that Al Ferraby, who has been on CFAX since 1994, has been charged with one count of luring a child under 16 and another count of luring a child under 18. Vancouver police say in a statement that a 59-year-old Victoria man was arrested in February after the departments child exploitation unit initiated an investigation, with two child-luring charges laid on Wednesday. Ferraby is a familiar face in Greater Victoria, frequently singing the national anthem at sporting and community events, including the memorial for former premier John Horgan that was broadcast province-wide last December. The Crime Branch received a tip-off early Wednesday morning about suspicious men in cars around Chikhali Patil Nagar. Acting swiftly, officers laid a trap and detained nine individuals. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to planning the heist. Police seized multiple pistols, koytas (sharp weapons), chilli powder, bamboo sticks, and ropes from them.

The operation was led by the Anti-Gunda Squad under the supervision of DCP (Crime) Dr. Shivaji Pawar, ACP (Crime 1) Dr. Vishal Hire, and API Harish Mane.

DCP Dr. Pawar stated, “A case has been registered against them. The prime accused Anirudha Jadhav is a notorious criminal with a previous MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) case registered. He has 10 cases of serious crimes registered across Maharashtra. Other members, including Yash Khandagale, Sohan Chandeliya (externed from Pune District), and Abhishek Pawar, also have criminal records.”

### What Is the Ravan Gang?

Police reports indicate that the Ravan Gang was formed around a decade ago, with criminal cases against members surfacing in the late 2010s. Initially, the gang operated mainly in Dehu Road, Nigdi, and Akurdi areas but gradually expanded across Pimpri-Chinchwad city and nearby rural regions.

Waghmode was arrested in July 2019 by Nigdi Police near Akurdi Police Station, and six more gang members were arrested in August 2019. Since then, gang activities significantly declined.

Though occasional arrests of potential gang members made the news, there was little evidence of organised crime until recently.

The Ravan Gang is known for committing murders, attempted murders, extortion, kidnapping, and robberies.

Since 2022, the gang has been rising in prominence again due to increased social media activity, especially involving minors and young adults. Violence and robbery incidents attributed to the gang have surged, with accused individuals claiming affiliation to the Ravan Gang.

A senior police official commented, “The gang was previously active only on social media. The police have taken strict action against members committing serious crimes. However, recently their incidents are being reported again.”

Experts and local journalists suggest a possible link to upcoming Local Bodies Elections. Opportunistic candidates may seek to assert dominance through criminal gangs like the Ravan Gang to sway voters, thereby increasing the gang’s activity.
