Team sports lower blood pressure for people with chronic diseases

New research highlights that team sports are a highly effective and potentially life-extending form of exercise for people with high blood pressure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Even after a relatively short training period involving team sports, participants showed significantly improved blood pressure. In Denmark, one in four adults suffers from high blood pressure (hypertension), which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and premature death. The risk is even more pronounced among individuals with chronic conditions such as COPD and type 2 diabetes.

A new study published in the *Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology* documents that team sports can serve as a motivating and effective exercise option for this group.

### Study Overview

The study involved 28 individuals with high blood pressure, including 16 participants (8 men and 8 women) with type 2 diabetes and 12 participants (7 men and 5 women) with COPD. They took part in a 12-week training program at a municipal health center.

Participants engaged in team sports such as floorball and cone ball twice a week, under the guidance of trained staff.

### Key Findings

– **Systolic blood pressure dropped significantly**, by an average of 10-12 mmHg.
– Participants became faster and more mobile in a functional walking test.
– The training was perceived as fun, social, and motivating, making it easier to maintain compared to traditional forms of exercise.

While there were no measurable changes in body weight, muscle strength, or diastolic blood pressure, the drop in systolic blood pressure is particularly noteworthy.

*Note*: Systolic blood pressure reflects the pressure when the heart contracts and pumps blood into the circulatory system, whereas diastolic blood pressure is the lowest pressure measured between heartbeats.

### Expert Insights

“We were surprised that patients could achieve such a significant drop in blood pressure in such a short time,” says research assistant Jesper Atti, who helped conduct the study.

International research, including findings from the World Health Organization (WHO) and *The Lancet*, shows that reducing systolic blood pressure by just 10 mmHg can lower the risk of stroke by up to 30%, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death by up to 20%.

The study was carried out in Brøndby Municipality, with physiotherapist Johan Schou closely monitoring participants’ progress.

“We observed great motivation among participants. Many expressed that the social aspect was crucial to their engagement. It was truly heartening to see that a large proportion chose to continue with team sports at evening school after the program ended. They also realized how important — and how fun — it can be to get their heart rate up,” says Johan Schou.

### Conclusion and Future Directions

This study demonstrates that targeted team sports training at municipal health centers can be an effective supplement to existing services for citizens with chronic diseases and high blood pressure. It has a significant positive impact on quality of life, physical function, and disease risk.

“We are now in dialogue with several municipalities interested in using team sports for rehabilitating these patient groups. Our goal is to ensure participants can continue activities in sports communities after the program ends, such as evening schools or local sports clubs,” says Jens Bangsbo, head of the Centre for Team Sport and Health. The study was supported by the Nordea Foundation.

Engaging in team sports not only improves health but also fosters social connections, making it an appealing option for managing chronic health conditions. If you or someone you know has high blood pressure or COPD, consider discussing team sports as a potential part of your wellness plan with your healthcare provider.

Asking Eric: Friend drags up addiction-related offenses, 31 years later

**Dear Eric: Reflections on Recovery and Friendship**

I have been in recovery from alcohol addiction for almost 31 years. Needless to say, my life is wonderful and so much better compared to those years when I was active in my addiction. Recently, I was with someone who knew me before recovery. In a room full of people who didn’t know me very well, she told a story about how I was drunk, in a blackout, and stole something from someone.

Now, I don’t know if this even happened. However, I was so embarrassed and hurt by the fact that she would do this to me. She is my dear friend, and we have been friends for more than 50 years. I am really upset enough by this to just want to end the friendship. It’s really not the first time it’s happened. It seems to happen when we are with people who have just met me or don’t know me very well at all.

I would appreciate your thoughts on the matter.
— Not My Past

**Dear Not My Past:**

Congratulations on your years of sobriety. Your friend may consciously or subconsciously resent the new life you’ve made for yourself, especially if she felt she got the short end of the friendship stick during your active addiction. But if those feelings exist, they’re on her side of the street.

Before you sever the friendship, consider having a conversation in which you explain how you felt hurt by her story and ask if she sees it the same way. She may not realize what she’s doing. If that’s the case, she should quickly apologize, acknowledge what she did that was hurtful, and seek to make it right going forward.

If she takes the position that it’s no big deal, however, you’re within your right to leave the past in the past — even if that means part of that past is your friendship.

**Dear Eric: Sister Jealousy Over a Friend’s Visit**

My sister and I were once best friends. She has a friend from high school who was also her best friend. This friend and I have always gotten along and enjoyed each other’s company. Our friendship has progressed, and now my sister feels jealous and threatened by it.

I live on the West Coast, and they live in the Midwest. The friend has wanted to come visit me and has expressed this desire often. Now, my sister is beside herself, thinking this friend is trying to take her place. I have reassured her many times that this is not possible. Now my sister isn’t talking to me.

What should I do?
— Only One Sister

**Dear Only One Sister:**

It sounds like a visit might be in order for you. Your sister’s emotions are hers to manage, but you can help by talking this out in person. Jealousy is natural—we all feel it from time to time. But we have to be responsible for what we do with it.

Is it reasonable for her to think she’s being replaced by her friend? No, but it speaks to some deeper insecurity or question she has about your relationship.

If you want to change things, you may need to show up and say, “I care about you, I feel hurt when you won’t talk to me. Can we get to the bottom of this?”

**Dear Eric: Thoughts on Elder Abuse and Family Conflict**

This is the first time I have ever written in your column but the letter from “Not My Daughter” moved me to share. The writer, who described herself as disabled, was concerned about an upcoming visit from her terminally ill husband’s adult daughter. She states the daughter steals from their home and “has told my husband that she wants me to leave when she comes to visit.”

The writer was asking about secretly recording the daughter’s nasty comments and behavior. Eric, you were absolutely spot on to dissuade her from this potentially illegal method.

However, I’d like to add that this behavior strongly hints at elder abuse. I’d suggest she consider inviting another trusted adult friend or family member—maybe two or three—to be present when the daughter arrives. An advocate in the room might help curb the nasty comments and provide an extra set of eyes to prevent stealing. It’s her home, and there’s nothing illegal about having someone else there as a witness.

If hospice is involved, she can also ask a team member to be present to mediate and act on behalf of her husband. Hospice professionals are trained for issues much like this.

— Concerned Reader

**Dear Concerned Reader:**

This is excellent advice, and I heartily agree. Moreover, having a friend or two or three in the home will provide more immediate support and more potential remedies than a recording ever would.

**Delhi-NCR Air Quality Worsens; Five Stations Record AQI Above 300**

*By Snehil Singh | Oct 15, 2025, 06:12 pm*

The air quality in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) has further deteriorated, with five monitoring stations registering an Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 300. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Anand Vihar recorded the highest AQI at a staggering 345.

Other areas also reported alarming AQI figures: DU North Campus and CRRI Mathura Road each recorded 307, while Dwarka Sector 8 and Wazirpur reported 314 and 325, respectively.

**Pollution Response: GRAP Stage-1 Activated**

In response to the worsening air quality, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated Stage-1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR. This comes as AQI levels have fallen between 200 and 300, categorized as “poor.”

Stage-1 implementation mandates strict preventive measures, including the deployment of anti-smog guns and dust suppression activities at construction sites to control pollution sources.

**Pollution Sources: Transport Emissions Lead**

Data from the Decision Support System (DSS) identifies transport emissions as the largest contributor to Delhi’s pollution, accounting for 19.8% of total emissions. On Tuesday, the city recorded an AQI of 201, falling under the “poor” air quality category.

For reference, the CPCB classifies AQI as follows:
– 0-50: Good
– 51-100: Satisfactory
– 101-200: Moderate
– 201-300: Poor
– 301-400: Very Poor
– Above 400: Severe

**Weather Impact**

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that Delhi’s minimum temperature on Wednesday was 18.3°C — slightly below the normal of 19.6°C. This marks the fifth consecutive day with minimum temperatures under 20°C for the 2025-26 winter season. The maximum temperature hovered around 33°C.

Meanwhile, relative humidity was high at 89% as recorded at 8:30 am, factors that could further affect air quality levels.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions as the air pollution situation remains critical.

Why Delhi’s air quality may become ‘poor’ from Wednesday

**Why Delhi’s Air Quality May Become ‘Poor’ from Wednesday**
*By Snehil Singh | October 13, 2025 | 8:30 PM*

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a decline in Delhi’s air quality as the winter season approaches. The city’s air is expected to remain in the “moderate” category on October 13 and 14 but will likely slip into the “poor” category for nearly a week starting October 15.

According to the IMD bulletin, “The air quality is very likely to be in the Moderate category from October 13-14. From October 15 onwards, it is expected to be in the Poor category for nearly a week.”

### Pollution Update: Slight Increase in Stubble Burning

Delhi’s air quality showed a slight improvement on Sunday, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 167, down from 199 on Saturday. This improvement was attributed to steady winds blowing at 10-15 km/h.

However, stubble burning in neighboring states has increased slightly, contributing to pollution levels in the city. The share of pollution from stubble burning rose from 0.4% on Saturday to 0.8% on Sunday.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences’ Early Warning System also predicts moderate air quality for October 13-14 and poor conditions from October 15 onward.

### Factors Behind the Pollution Spike

Delhi’s air quality typically worsens in October due to several reasons:

– Retreating monsoon rains and cooler temperatures
– Increased stubble burning in Punjab, Haryana, and nearby states
– Festive fireworks adding to pollution levels

Additionally, slower winds and cooler weather during this season lead to a “temperature inversion,” where a layer of warm air traps pollutants near the ground, worsening air quality. Smoke carried by north-westerly winds from Punjab and Haryana further aggravates the situation.

On Sunday, vehicles were the largest contributors to PM2.5 pollution, accounting for 19.8%, followed by emissions from Sonipat (9.2%) and Jhajjar (5.1%).

### Seasonal Outlook: Clear Skies and Cool Winds

The IMD has forecast clear skies and cool northwesterly winds over the coming days, with maximum temperatures expected to rise to 34°C by Wednesday.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa highlighted that Delhi has recorded 199 days with AQI below 200 this year, nearly double the number reported in 2016. He said this marks a “real improvement on the ground.”

As winter advances, residents are advised to stay updated on air quality forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially from mid-October when pollution levels are expected to worsen.

*Stay tuned for more updates on Delhi’s air quality and pollution management.*

Dolly Parton Health Crisis Revealed: Country Star, 79, Suffering From Painful Bout of Kidney Stones Years After Inner Circle Feared Condition Could Be ‘Far More Serious’

**Dolly Parton Sparks Health Fears After Abrupt Appearance Cancellation**

*Published Oct. 8, 2025, 4:45 p.m. ET*

Dolly Parton has sparked fresh health concerns after she abruptly canceled an appearance, citing doctors’ orders. The country music superstar’s sister further fueled panic by requesting “prayers” as Parton suffered from painful kidney stones.

The *Jolene* hitmaker is no stranger to health challenges, with a history of kidney stones. In fact, her inner circle initially feared her intense abdominal pain might be caused by a far more serious condition, RadarOnline.com can reveal.

### Dolly Parton’s Secret Hospitalization

While Parton, 79, has enjoyed a strong music career spanning decades, her health struggles have been significant. She was diagnosed with endometriosis after experiencing excruciating pain and underwent a partial hysterectomy in 1985. This surgery left her unable to have children with her late husband, Carl Dean.

Decades later, in 2015, Parton was secretly hospitalized at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center due to another episode of intense stomach pain. After a series of tests, medical professionals concluded that kidney stones were the source of her agony. However, sources suggest that her inner circle remained worried a more serious diagnosis might be responsible.

To relieve her pain, Parton underwent treatments including laser therapy. Still, her loved ones were unconvinced she was completely out of danger. One insider revealed, “She was in such pain. It’s not the first – she’s been in a cancer battle before. We’re all terrified she has a far more serious condition than kidney stones.”

The insider added, “So far, the laser treatments haven’t worked, and she’s undergoing more testing. The scary thing is she has the symptoms of stomach cancer – and this is what she could be hiding.”

### GERD Diagnosis and Weight Loss Raise Concerns

Two years prior to her hospitalization for kidney stones, Parton was diagnosed with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which caused her severe heartburn, sore throats, and difficulty swallowing. GERD can also increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

At the same time, Parton suddenly dropped 20 pounds, escalating concerns for her health. Sources say she researched her condition thoroughly and was fully aware of the cancer risks associated with GERD.

### Parton’s Previous Cancer Scare and Preventative Measures

Despite her fears, Parton faced the diagnosis bravely and took preventative steps to reduce the risk of esophageal cancer. The source noted, “Dolly always projects an upbeat, positive image, but underneath that she was terrified.”

Weighing her options, Parton opted for surgery to have a state-of-the-art device called LINX implanted into her esophagus. According to insiders, Parton kept her 2013 surgery completely under wraps: “Dolly didn’t want her friends, family, and fans to worry about her, so the entire procedure was done under the tightest security.”

### Addressing Current Health Rumors

Unlike her past health struggles, Parton has not been able to keep her current health crisis private. Following her sister’s public plea for prayers, rumors about her health and even death began to circulate online.

In response, Parton released a video message to reassure fans, stating, “I’m not dying.” She addressed the rumors directly, saying:

> “I wanted to put everybody’s mind at ease, those that seem to be real concerned, which I appreciate – and I appreciate your prayers, ’cause I’m a person of faith, I can always use the prayers for anything and everything – but I want you to know that I’m OK!”

Despite the challenges, Dolly Parton’s resilience and positive spirit continue to inspire her fans around the world.
